For the majority of us, our friends are basically family. Not only are they the people that we have the most fun with, but they're also the ones that we go to in times of strife and joy. However, in the same way that love can be blind, the people that we strike up deep, meaningful and long-lasting friendships with can also come as a surprise.

Here are some of the most unlikely celebrity friendships...

1. Anna Wintour and Roger Federer

The Vogue US editor isn't quite as Devil Wears Prada icy when dealing with tennis superstar, Roger Federer. Writing in Tennis magazine, Wintour opened up about her friendship with Federer, which began back in 2005 after meeting through a mutual friend. She gushily revealed that although "everyone calls themselves Roger Federer fans", she regards herself as a "groupie".

2. Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart

Aside from both having a penchant for breaking the law, Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg actually started a show together, Martha & Snoop's Dinner Party, where they always seem to be having a whale of a time, dancing (with a plate of brownies, no less!). It might be a strange one, but that doesn't make it any less beautiful...

3. Helen Mirren and Russell Brand

Dame Helen Mirren and Russell Brand's friendship started when they both starred in The Tempest back in 2010. In fact, in an interview with Jonathan Ross, Mirren said that Brand even gave her a pair of his underwear as a parting gift. How... lovely?

4. Bette Midler and 50 Cent

When 50 Cent - or Curtis Jackson - joined the New York Restoration Project, which Midler founded in 1995, they immediately hit it off. "Little Jewish lady and the great big rapper," the Broadway veteran said of her friendship with 50 Cent. "I love him; he's a doll." In fact, she even told E! that the rapper didn't even ask how much it would cost to join the non-profit organization, he just asked: "Where do I sign?"

How's that for friendship?

5. Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning

Fanning starred alongside Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds when she was just 11 - and ever since then, Cruise has sent her a birthday gift every year. The actress told Andy Cohen about this sweet tradition, and when he asked for further details, she revealed that it was "mostly shoes".

6. Courtney Love and Carrie Fisher

Love and Fisher were close for a number of years. Fisher interviewed the Hole front-woman for her show, Conversations From the Edge, back in 2010, and they delved into everything from life, love and children, to their best memories of the Hollywood circuit. And according to an Instagram that Love posted in December 2015, they were each other's top pick for a Christmas cuddle.

Well, I don't know about you, but I would never put these pairs together - but regardless - it's evident that they're very happy together.
