Even with Keeping Up With The Kardashians becoming one of the most popular shows on television, it's hard to imagine this happening five years ago. Not only is Donald Trump, host of The Apprentice, now the President of the United States - but he's inviting reality star Kim Kardashian into the White House.

And it wasn't just a photo op, either, but rather a discussion of a very real issue.

People were, understandably, blindsided by the meeting. Once Trump tweeted out an image of the two of them posing alongside one another in the oval office, Twitter responded by, of course, making it into a meme.

The reason that Kim was speaking to the president in the first place was actually a very important one: on behalf of Alice Marie Johnson.

Kim, along with much of the internet, have become supporters of Johnson's cause after becoming aware of her plight last year. Now 63 years old, she has been serving a life sentence in prison - all for a non-violent, first-time drug offence. Kim has been campaigning for her release and spreading the word to the masses since she found out about Johnson's story last October.

It appears that Kim's words went some way to changing Trump's mind, as he has now granted clemency to Alice Johnson. Her sentence was commuted, but she did not receive a full pardon.

Kim later tweeted about what it was like to speak with Alice to tell her the results of the talk, after spending 22 years in jail.

In a televised interview from Thursday, Kim explained exactly what went down in her meeting with Trump, and seems to have come away with some positive feelings about the man after the discussion. Speaking to CNN's Van Jones, she said:

"He felt it, he was compassionate. He said, 'You know, this is a really long time that she's been in here. This just isn't fair'. He knew that this was the right thing to do."

She also discussed how speaking to him didn't change or reflect her feelings on the Trump administration, accepting that she would take any backlash if it meant helping Alice Johnson out of her situation.

"At that point, I had to make the decision that this was bigger than me. So I'm worried about my brand? And a woman's been in jail for 22 years almost? That to me, it wasn't even a question.

"I would have taken the backlash no matter what the outcome would have been, just to try for her."

The initial meeting was a little strange for her, as you can imagine. "Wait a minute, we're in the Oval Office," she said. "This is Crazy". She then pulled a quick quip out for the president, saying I'm here because I really want to know why did you kick Khloe off The Apprentice," adding "It was a laugh and it was funny and then we got into business."

A week later, she got the call from Trump to tell her the good news.

"I think just — he felt her heart. And he explained that to me. I mean, when he said he has the papers in front of him and he's signing it, I just, like, my heart was so full."

The full interview is scheduled to air on CNN's The Van Jones Show on 16 June.
