A lifelong smoker who was desperate to quit has decided to lock his head inside a metal cage in an attempt to help him kick the habit.

Some people will go to quite some lengths to break a bad addiction - but not everyone will go to the extremes like this man did after he became determined to overcome his smoking addiction.

According to Turkish news outlet Hürriyet, Ibrahim Yücel from Turkey had been smoking two packets of cigarettes every single day since the age of 16. However, after the 52-year-old's father tragically passed away from lung cancer, Yücel made the decision to quit for the good of his health and his family.

He has made several attempts to kick the habit but his efforts have always failed. So one day, Yücel spotted a successful health campaign that showed motorbike riders donning safety helmets -- something that inspired him to create a "head cage" that would prevent him from putting a cigarette in his mouth.

Watch Yücel in his metal helmet below:

The father, from the western province of Kütahya, designed the bizarre helmet - which resembles a bird cage - using 40 meters of copper wire to ensure that it is impossible to smoke even if his willpower betrays him.

In addition to this, Hürriyet reported that every morning, the determined man handed over the keys to the elaborate device to his wife or daughter, so that he was unable to break his vow to himself.

Furthermore, it is believed that Yücel can eat crackers and sip on water through the bulky, medieval-style headgear, but not much else - meaning that he has to be unlocked to have meals.

After Yücel's story and pictures were shared on Reddit, one person who understood his dilemma wrote: "That is commitment right there, " and another user remarked: "Whatever works, works."

A third person going through the same predicament commented: "Holy crap! I need this! Nothing else could stop me from smoking! I've often said that I would need to be locked in a padded room for six months, but this actually looks more doable!"

Meanwhile, a fourth quipped: "This would absolutely destroy me. My eyes hurt so much when looking through a grid or fence or whatever, even when they're closed, they somehow focus on what I know is there. This is basically my hell."

At the time, the International Business Times disclosed that Yücel's wife and daughter had been supporting him through his endeavors, despite being embarrassed by the slightly ridiculous get-up.

However, his neighbors apparently struggled to get used to the sight of his head covered in metal as footage revealed young children being stunned by the unusual spectacle as he walked by.

Nevertheless, it looks like Yücel unwillingly became the face of the most intense anti-smoking campaign of all time.
