Eric Carmen - best known for the hit songs 'All By Myself' and 'Hungry Eyes' - has died at the age of 74.

His passing was announced by his wife, Amy, on his official website.

"It is with tremendous sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Eric Carmen," she said. "Our sweet, loving, and talented Eric passed away in his sleep, over the weekend. It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy."

She concluded her statement with the quote "Love is all that matters... faithful and forever" from her late husband's 1977 solo album Boats Against The Current.

The singer-songwriter rose to prominence with the band, Raspberries, before embarking on a solo career with hit songs including 'Never Gonna Fall In Love Again'.

His song 'All By Myself', which was famously covered by Celine Dion, is played in an iconic scene in British rom com Bridget Jones's Diary, starring Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

'Hungry Eyes' played in Dirty Dancing which starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.

The Raspberries frontman also wrote 'Almost Paradise' which featured on the Footloose soundtrack.

In the early 1970s, he co-founded the Raspberries along with Jim Bonfanti and Wally Bryson. Dave Smalley later joined when John Aleksic left the group.

The band's debut album Raspberries was released in 1972, with some of the tracks - including 'Go All The Way' - hitting the charts.

The track was controversial at the time and was even banned by the BBC in the UK for being sexually provocative. It was, however, included in the first Guardians Of The Galaxy soundtrack.

After another four albums, the bandmates ended up going their separate ways in 1975, with Carmen having a successful solo career.

Carmen also toured with Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band in 2000.

He is survived by his wife and two children, Kathryn and Clayton.
