Acid attack victim shares her incredible recovery
With over half of the UK's acid attacks taking place in the British capital, London has emerged as the veritable hot-spot for acid attacks of late. Certainly, the attack on Resham Khan and her cousin, Jameel Mukhtar, on June 21 caused nationwide outrage, and resulted in the Home Secretary pledging to increase the Met Police's stop and search powers in an attempt to clamp down on the attacks.
Resham Khan was left with serious facial burns after having a corrosive substance thrown at her and her 37-year-old cousin on her 21st birthday. The pair were driving through Beckton, East London on the morning of June 21. The aspiring model had just arrived home after spending nine months studying abroad in Cyprus, and the two had plans to celebrate Resham's special day.
However, as the pair approached a red light, a man who is believed to be 25-year old John Tomlin threw an corrosive substance through the passenger and driver's windows, leaving the two with life-changing injuries.
But now, two months after the callous attack, Resham has shared pictures of her amazing recovery on Twitter.
Resham took the snaps at 2am in preparation for Eid al-Adha celebrations. The business management student said that applying makeup for the first time since the attack stirred up many emotions, as it gave her a glimpse at her old self.
However, she added that the photos only showed the "good" side of her face, and that she still has a way to go before she can say that she is "recovered".
"Of course my face isn't what it was, the images show mainly one side," she said before receiving hundreds of compliments from people all over the world. "You're all actually making me so emotional, thank you all so much I feel so lucky to be surrounded by so much positivity," she later responded.
Writing on her blog in July, Resham revealed that she was so traumatised by the event that she was too scared to walk to her local shop:
"Today I was too petrified to walk to my local shop. Too scared to face the world. Too scared of the looks I might get. To scared to tackle the question 'how are you'. Just too scared. That’s all I’ve been. Terrified and reluctant. My life on pause, frozen with fear."
The Met Police have charged John Tomlin, who also hails from East London with two counts of Grievous Bodily Harm. He is due to stand trial at Southwark Crown Court on November 27.
