Is there such a thing as a truly selfless act?

When you give a homeless person some change or help an old lady cross the street, you're probably familiar with the warm, fuzzy feeling you feel deep inside your soul. There's nothing like it, is there? But then, since you enjoyed it, then some people will argue that there's something in it for you, and then tell you it can't be a selfless act as a result.

I'm not here to get bogged down in some Philosophy 101, but this is a great way to talk about something pretty awesome that took place earlier this week, where a man did something kind for another person out of the good of his heart. Even better: it took place in a McDonald's.

Now over the past few days, the interactions that have taken place have been somewhat more... contentious, so for me, it's nice to see people being kind in McDonald's again. Much like that previous altercation, though, this was captured on video as well.

Taking place out in Victoria, Australia, an elderly man was standing underneath the Golden Arches, his stomach rumbling for a meal. Perfectly understandable, I think. But without the correct amount of money on you, you're in a bit of a pickle.

With a whole bunch of change on his person, this elderly gentleman was finding it particularly pesky to pay. All seemed lost, but then, Dave Love swooped in to save the day. What a fantastic name, by the way - Dave Love. Brilliant.

Anyway, seeing a fellow McDonald's-goer decidedly not loving it, Love decided to pay for the man's meal, warming hearts everywhere with his generosity and really helping to... spread the Love (I'm not apologising). I'm going to be an optimist and say that this happens at least some of the time, but there's a very good chance we never would've heard of Dave Love's kind act, had it not been for his partner Melanie Langley.

The kind of guy that Dave Love is, he definitely would be okay if nobody ever found about his kind act, but Langley was sure to film him secretly, and upload the entire exchange to Facebook. "STOP SCROLLING, this WILL make your day," she warns in the post description, and we are inclined to agree.

"This man melts my heart I had no idea what he was up to as he ordered his morning coffee but quickly realised and couldn’t not video this incredible act of kindness. Your true character is revealed when nobody’s watching. Oh and you wouldn’t believe it, his surname is LOVE. He bought this old mans [sic] coffee, breakfast and gave him $20. Oh and I told him I wasn’t videoing as he would’ve made me turn it off."

Since being posted on Monday, this video's gone super viral: having already racked up 2.3 million views and 37,000 shares, it's clear to see that people feel the same way about Dave Love's selfless act. We all need a Dave Love in our lives from time to time.
