Your wedding day is said to be the best day of your life, but if there's one thing that could make it even better, it's your hero turning up. That's exactly what happened when J.K. Rowling showed up at a Scottish couple's wedding recently, making their day go from incredible to truly magical.

Two men called Nick and John were getting married at Prestonfield House in Edinburgh on Sunday when the Harry Potter author surprised them by casually rocking up for a few pictures. It is believed that the 53-year-old was having lunch at the same location.

The exciting incident came to public attention after wedding photographer Matt Fothergill posted the pictures on his Facebook page, revealing that those present were "screaming like big kids". In one photograph, Rowling can be seen surprising the flabbergasted couple from behind, while others show her embracing the twosome.

"Holy sh*t!" he wrote. "I think there's definitely that saying "Never meet you heroes…" as in don't meet your idols as they can never live up to the hype and you will inevitably feel let down. I can safely say this was not one of those occasions….simply not the case with the awesome J.K. Rowling!"

After describing the "gorgeous wee wedding" where "despite unpromising weather spirits were extremely high", he stated: "And then JK Rowling (as always happens in Edinburgh! Ooft! So passe!) dropped into their couples session for a quick pose! Total f*cking ledge! I wish I could say we were cool about it. Not even slightly. I think she got about 20 feet before we all started screaming like big kids. [sic]"

Fothergill later spoke to PinkNews about the spellbinding encounter, claiming that he was the one who braved going up to talk to the award-winning author to ask her to be in the wedding pictures.

He said: "[Nick and John] were looking over my shoulder and looking quite excited. Then, they rushed towards me and said in very hushed tones something like, ‘JK Rowling is right behind you’ and then we joked about how cool it would be to have her in a wedding photo. I swallowed some serious nerves and ran up, fanboyed a smidge and asked as politely as I could if she wouldn’t mind posing for a quick picture with the boys as it was their wedding day."

He continued: "She was just delightful from start to finish. She turned and smiled, strode over and gave them both the biggest hugs and wished them the greatest of health and happiness. It was such a wonderful surreal beautiful moment."

In addition, one of the grooms Nick later commented on the photographer's Facebook post, admitting that, in spite of his excitement, he had forgotten to mention the crazy event in his speech. Thank you so much Matt for all your work yesterday. It was a brilliant BRILLIANT day and someone is going to have to peel me off the ceiling I'm so high," he wrote. "However, we darn well forgot to mention JK in our speeches (too much to remember) so I had to go round each table recounting the story."

If I were you Nick, I'd be shouting that story from the rooftops! Congratulations, to you and John! What a magical day!
