In a remarkable live-saving procedure that was caught on camera, vets in Sydney, Australia removed an entire beach towel from a pet Jungle Carpet Python named Monty.
The 18-year-old female snake devoured the towel in her owner's home in Sydney, Australia and was subsequently taken to Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) on February 24. Here, incredible footage was recorded that shows vets performing a "life-saving procedure" by pulling the towel from Monty's mouth.
You can watch the jaw-dropping footage of the medical procedure right here:Dr Olivia Clarke said that this was the first instance in which the hospital had received a snake that had swallowed a towel.
The hospital explained that Monty, who is three meters long and weighs five kilograms, had radiographs to confirm the towel's location. After this, she was anesthetized so that vets could begin the procedure of removing it.
They used a flexible endoscope to locate the end of the towel, after which forceps were placed through the endoscope in order to grasp the material.
Monty was let out of hospital the same day and was returned safely to her owners, who revealed that she was "back to her happy, hungry self."
"We see all kinds of interesting cases in our Avian and Exotics Department, but it's not every day we see something quite as unusual and as extraordinary as this case," Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) said in a statement.
"Once we had a good grip, the towel was able to be carefully removed from the gastrointestinal tract with endoscopic guidance.
''This was a life-saving procedure. If we had not been able to remove the towel, Monty would not have survived.''
