Amber Heard's former best friend has testified against her ex-husband Johnny Depp.

Raquel Pennington - who lived in the same downtown building as Depp and Heard while they were married - told the court on Wednesday that she witnessed the aftermath of several violent fights, adding that she was often "scared" for her friend's safety.

After one alleged incident, the day before Heard appeared on James Corden's The Late Late Show, Pennington recalled that Heard's hair had been pulled out and her face was red with injuries.

She told the court that in December 2015, the Aquaman actor asked her to come over to her and Depp's penthouse. Per Pennington's testimony, she found Heard upset and hurt.

"Her face was red, swollen, the hair had been ripped out of her head," she said.

Becoming visibly emotional, Pennington added that she watched her friend sleep that night because she was so fearful she had a concussion. "I don’t think I even slept that night watching her to make sure she didn’t..." she choked.

Heard's attorneys then showed the court photos of the star taken by Pennington that night, in which her face appears swollen and bruised.

Pennington sobbed as she described the injuries, claiming Heard had a black eye, bust lip, and hair pulled out.

Depp's attorneys have previously tried to refute the incident, claiming that when Heard appeared on The Late Late Show the following day she bore no signs of injuries.

Pennington addressed these claims, saying: "My reaction is that that is a false statement."

"I saw injuries on her body from the time directly after they happened throughout the next night, the next day and as they continued to heal," she added, before insisting that the photos were not staged, and claiming that she watched Heard cover her injuries with makeup before the show.

Throughout Pennington's testimony, Heard was seen wiping tears from her eyes.

She and her ex-husband are currently embroiled in a $50 million defamation lawsuit. Depp is suing Heard over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post, in which she claimed the be a victim of domestic abuse and which he claims ruined his career.

Heard, meanwhile, is countersuing her ex for $100 million, citing multiple occasions during their relationship when he assaulted her.
