Austin Butler broke down in tears during his Saturday Night Live hosting gig over the weekend, as he dedicated the episode to his late mother.

The actor, 31, made his SNL hosting debut over the weekend, where he reflected on his recent stint starring as Elvis Presley in the legendary musician's biopic, as well as growing up in Anaheim, California.

Butler's opening monologue joked about how his voice had changed since starring as the King of Rock and Roll and being home-schooled as a child.

However, it was looking back on his childhood - and imagining how proud his mother would be to see him overcome his shyness to host SNL - which left him wiping away tears.

Watch the emotional moment here:

Butler's mother, Lori, died in 2014 after battling cancer, when the actor was 23 years old - the same age Presley had been when his own mother Gladys died.

He told the audience during his opening monologue: "We watched every week. Even though I had this crippling shyness, when I was with her, I’d do anything to make my mom laugh. I’d make funny faces and voices and I’d even do this Gollum impression."

Butler added: "Being silly with her is what broke me out of my shell and it’s the core of what started me in acting."

His voice cracked as he continued: "My mom is no longer with us but I’ve been thinking a lot about her this week just imagining how proud she’d be that her son - who used to not even be able to order food for myself at a restaurant - is now standing on this stage."

Wiping away a tear, he revealed: "So tonight, anytime you see me doing a silly voice or making a funny face, that’s for you mom," as he pointed to the sky.

Viewers were moved by his show of emotion, commenting: "We all got the feels at the same time he did when he was talking about his mom."

One commenter added: "The way Austin talks about his mom, is the way every man should feel about their mom, you can just feel the love he has for her."

Butler had previously revealed that losing his mom at the same age as Presley did helped him to connect to the musician while playing him in the Baz Luhrman biopic.

He told Today at the time: "When I learned about his mom - and then knowing that we were the exact same age - that just hit me.

"It was just one of those things where you know the stars are aligning and that just became the most personal thing."

One thing's for certain, Butler's mom would be very proud of him indeed.
