At the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, Adrien Brody clinched his second Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of architect László Tóth in The Brutalist.
However, a particular moment during the ceremony garnered significant attention and sparked debate among viewers.
As Brody's name was announced, he rose to accept his award but realized he was still chewing gum.
In a split-second decision, he removed the gum and tossed it toward his partner, fashion designer Georgina Chapman, who attempted to catch it but missed, resulting in the gum landing on the floor. This act was captured on camera and quickly circulated on social media, eliciting a mix of reactions.
Critics labeled the gesture as "disgusting" and lacking decorum. One viewer commented, "Adrien Brody's gross act with the chewing gum proves all that money can't buy class and style." Another remarked, "Adrien Brody threw his gum at his wife before going on the stage, so I was already irritated before he started his feature-length monologue."

In response to the backlash, Brody addressed the incident during an appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark. He explained, "I could've swallowed it, but I didn't think about that. I had to get rid of it somehow."
Not all reactions were negative. Some viewers found the moment endearing and relatable. A social media user quipped, "I can’t believe people think Adrien Brody chucking his gf his chewing gum is gross! I’d have tried to catch it with my mouth."
Another added, "Adrien Brody throwing his gum at his partner before going on stage is both iconic & disgusting."
Beyond the gum incident, Brody's acceptance speech also drew attention. He spoke for five minutes and 40 seconds, surpassing the previous record held by Greer Garson in 1943.

During his speech, Brody reflected on the fragility of the acting profession and emphasized the importance of addressing themes like the Holocaust, antisemitism, racism, and systematic oppression. When the orchestra attempted to play him off, he remarked, "Please turn the music off. I've done this before; it's not my first rodeo."
Brody also took a moment to express gratitude toward Chapman and her children, stating, "I share this with my amazing partner, Georgina, who has not only reinvigorated my own self-worth but my sense of value, and her beautiful children, Dash and India."
He added, "I know this has been a roller coaster, but thank you for accepting me into your life. And popsie's coming home a winner."
The 2025 Oscars were filled with memorable moments, including Anora winning Best Picture and Halle Berry recreating her infamous kiss with Brody from 22 years ago on the red carpet.
However, Brody's gum-tossing incident remains one of the most talked-about events, highlighting how spontaneous actions at high-profile ceremonies can captivate public attention and spark widespread discussion.
