Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky have come under fire from social media users after sharing a video from their sons' birthday celebrations.

Now, family birthday parties are usually full of playful antics. When I was 10, I can remember unwrapping what I thought was a Nintendo 64, but was actually just a bottle of shampoo. (Real funny, dad.)

However, it seems that some social media users feel like Hemsworth, 39, and Pataky, 46, went too far when it came to teasing one of their children.

The famous power couple married back in 2010, and share three children together, eldest daughter India, and twins Tristan and Sasha, who have recently celebrated their 9th birthday.

One of the photos from the big day shows mom Elsa helping to playfully shove one of her son's faces into a chocolate cake, as the rest of the family laughs along.

The Marvel star captioned the post: "Happy 9th birthday to my two little men! Only one way to eat cake in this house and that’s to have mum slam your head into it face first!! 'Hey mum I don’t like chocolate cake I prefer vanilla' 'oh really son, what about now'?"

But despite the playful scenes, people in the comments section were divided over the snap.

"Why people smash their kids face in the cake is above my understanding but whatever," one person commented, with a second adding: "whhhyyyyy do people think this is funny".

A third Instagram user simply commented: "That's not funny."

"If my mum did that to me I would pick it up and throw it at her," a fourth added.

However, despite the Fun Police clearly being on patrol, there were plenty of others who loved seeing the "down-to-earth" family sharing such a wholesome moment.

One fan wrote: "Happy birthday to your sons! Lucky to have such fun parents!"

Another commented: "Such a down-to-earth great family that knows how to have real fun."

And one person added: "Builds character! Our son liked a whip cream pie in the face on his birthday. We were happy to oblige"

The post was also flooded with 'happy birthday' wishes for the boys, as well as some fans being concerned about whether or not the cake was actually eaten after the face-slamming (after all, it does look absolutely delicious).

The Thor star has been open about his and Pataky's parenting style - especially considering both the children's parents are huge household names.

Speaking to GQ Australia in 2018, Hemsworth revealed: "Elsa and I talk a lot about how we instill that same appreciation and respect for things. I don't want them to feel like they're privileged in any way. The fact that we have money and their parents are famous, that somehow they're special, that scares me because we grew up with no money."

They sound like pretty amazing parents to me, and if they're interested in adopting a 31-year-old bald grown man, they only have to ask.
