Audiences around the world are still reeling following the dramatic physical altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock at last night's Oscars ceremony.

During the 94th Academy Awards, 57-year-old Rock took to the stage to do what he was paid to do: Tell jokes.

However, after poking fun at married couple Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, the Everybody Hates Chris star made a passing joke about Jade Pinkett Smith, who was sat in the audience alongside her husband, Will.

"Jada, I love ya! G.I. Jane 2 - can't wait to see it," Rock said, drawing laughter from the crowd, and even Will himself.

But 50-year-old Jada did not see the funny side of the comment, immediately looking unimpressed and rolling her eyes.

You can see the awkward punchline below:

Moments later, 53-year-old Will took to the stage, approached Rock, and slapped him around the face.

The audience - unable to determine whether or not the incident was a pre-planned skit, off-the-cuff joke, or genuine heated strike - let out an uncomfortable mix of laughter and shock. It wasn't until Will had returned to his seat that it became apparent that this was no sketch.

"Keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth," the Men in Black star screamed at Rock, who promptly responded: "Wow dude. It was a G.I. Jane joke."

At the top of. his voice, Smith then once again repeated: "Keep my wife's name out your f****** mouth!"

An uncensored version can be seen below (Warning - strong language):

To which Rock replied: "I'm going to, okay?"

So, what was the joke a reference to and why did it result in such a heated response from Smith?

Well, the joke was most likely a reference to the fact that Jada Pinkett Smith is currently rocking a shaved head, mirroring Demi Moore's buzzcut from the 1997 war drama G. I. Jane. Rock's comment was simply saying that Pinkett Smith looked like she was reprising the role for a sequel.

However, the subject of Pinkett Smith's hairstyle is an emotional one, due to the fact that the actor has repeatedly spoken out about her battle with alopecia.

Back in 2018, Pinkett Smith spoke about the condition on an episode of her Facebook show, Red Table Talk.

During the show, she said that she first suspected that she was suffering from the condition when she noticed that "handfuls" of her hair were coming out in the shower.

Pinkett Smith admitted that she was terrified when she realized what was happening, saying: "I was just like 'Oh my god am I going bald?' It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking with fear".

"That's why I cut my hair and continue to cut it," she added, referring to how she has chosen to manage her condition.

And back in December, Pinkett Smith shared a candid Instagram video showing off one of the bare scalp patches that she had chosen to embrace.

While showing off some hair loss at the top of her head, the mom-of-two explained that she didn't get "brain surgery" and it was just her alopecia.

"Now at this point, I can only laugh. I mean y'all know I've been struggling with alopecia and just all of a sudden, one day — look at this line right here — look at that," she said while touching her scalp. "And so, it just showed up like that. This is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide. So I thought I'd just share it so y'all are not asking any questions."
