DJ Diplo has stirred up the internet after joking that he once dated both pop superstar Katy Perry and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
This comes just as Perry and Trudeau’s budding relationship went public.
During an appearance on the Smart Girl Dumb Questions podcast, the 46-year-old producer raised eyebrows when the conversation turned to Perry’s new romance.
“I Did Date Trudeau Too”: Diplo Drops Bombshell (Sort Of)
While chatting with host Nayeema Raza about Quebec, Diplo described the city as “horny,” prompting Raza to mention “a hot prime minister,” referring to Trudeau, who is now dating Perry.
“And now Katy Perry is dating Justin,” Diplo said. “Pretty fire,” he added.
When Raza started to say: “I know so many people who like kind of—” Diplo interrupted with: “Dated Katy Perry, like me?”
“I did,” he elaborated. (The podcast later clarified he was joking.)
“I meant Trudeau,” Raza clarified.
“I did date Trudeau too,” Diplo quipped. “That was a weird one though,” he added. “Because I’m just … I’m not in the positions.”
“I think he’s hot,” Raza added.
“He is kind of hot,” Diplo agreed.
Despite some fans taking the comments seriously, the podcast’s official YouTube channel later cleared things up, replying to a commenter: “Lol!! no that part was a joke.”

Not All of It Was a Joke — Diplo Did Date Katy Perry
While his Trudeau comment was in jest, Diplo and Perry were indeed romantically linked in 2014. The two were spotted out in New York City and made appearances at Coachella and other industry events.
At the time, a source told E! News: “They get on really well. He’s just a fun guy and he makes her happy. They met when they started talking about doing music together, but there was an obvious chemistry there.”
Still, other insiders insisted they were simply “good friends.”
In 2017, Perry ranked her former flames in a game with James Corden during her Witness World Wide livestream. Diplo came in third behind John Mayer and Orlando Bloom.
Diplo later reacted on Twitter, writing: “I don’t even remember having sex,” and followed up with: “I won the bronze in sex Olympics.”

Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau Go Public in Paris
While Diplo’s Trudeau romance was all jokes, Perry and the Canadian Prime Minister are very much a real thing. The couple made their public debut in Paris, holding hands as they celebrated the singer’s 41st birthday.
Trudeau, 53, and Perry, 41, first sparked dating rumors back in July after they were spotted dining at Le Violon in Montreal.
They’ve since been seen together multiple times and even shared a subtle social media moment when Perry posted birthday footage — in which Trudeau could be seen smiling in the background as she blew out candles.
During a concert stop in Prague, Perry confirmed the relationship while reacting to a fan holding a marriage proposal sign.
“This guy is trying to get me to marry him and he has a ring in his hand,” she told the crowd in a TikTok video. “No! I am dating someone else for crying out f*****g loud,” she exclaimed.
A Fresh Start for Both After High-Profile Splits
Perry is newly single following her split from actor Orlando Bloom. The pair, who began dating in 2016 and got engaged in 2019, share a five-year-old daughter named Daisy.
Trudeau and his wife of 18 years, Sophie Grégoire, announced their separation in 2023. The former couple shares three children: son Xavier, 18, daughter Ella-Grace, 16, and son Hadrien, 11.
Sources close to the new couple say the connection is real. “Trudeau is ‘crazy’ about the ‘Teenage Dream’ singer and ‘thinks she is the perfect woman,’” a source told Page Six.
“They are simpatico on everything including politics, kids and French food,” the insider added. “Both have a sparkle for each other.”
