Dolly Parton once stunned fans after revealing her natural hair in a throwback photo after years of wearing her signature blonde wig.
Throughout her over 60-year country music career, the 80-year-old singer-songwriter became renowned not only for her impeccable talent but also for her elaborate hairstyles that seemed to defy the laws of gravity and add a few inches to her height.
While the 'Jolene' songstress made no secret of the fact that she relied on wigs to get her fabulous trademark look, she left her supporters stunned after sharing a black-and-white picture taken around 1965, after she signed to Monument Records.
In the snapshot - which was captioned "Where the magic happens" - the star is in a recording booth and looks dressed down as she dons a classic white sweater and has her natural blonde, mid-length hair swept back.
Parton posted the photo on Instagram eight years ago, but it has recently resurfaced following the news of her death on Tuesday (August 25).
One shocked user reacted at the time: "Wow Dolly! I absolutely love your natural hair! You are beyond gorgeous!" while another chimed in: "Dolly Parton looks very pretty even without a big wig. I’m guessing that she uses it for her trademark after all these years. She is very pretty with or without her big hair."
A third commented: "Her hair was so pretty, I can understand maybe wearing a wig later in [her] career but I loved her hair in her earlier days."
A fourth shared: "I love the wigs because they are her trademark. She is beautiful with or without them."
In an interview with Elle for their Women In Hollywood issue in 2019, the 'Islands in the Stream' vocalist opened up about how she looked when she finally took off her famous hair pieces.
"I don’t always wear [wigs] in my daily life, but I always still pouf up my hair," Parton said. "I still like to have that flashy hair. When I’m around home, I wear my little scrunchies, but I always put on some makeup and fix my own hair as cute as I can fix it. Wigs are just so handy. I’m so busy, and I have so many choices. I never have a bad hair day, and that’s a good thing."
Parton also revealed in her interview with the publication that the hairstyle was something she had to fight hard for. She admitted that her friend and mentor, Chet Atkins, once tried to persuade her to change her style to be taken more seriously while she was getting her career started in Nashville.
"I said, 'You know what? I can’t separate the two. This is who I am.' I not only didn’t tone it down, I figured if my work was truly good enough, people would eventually recognize that," she explained. "It was about me knowing who I was, being happy with me, and feeling comfortable in the way I presented myself. If I was happy, I could make other people happy."
