Fans were left in shock when Orlando Bloom referred to Katy Perry by her real name during his VMAs speech.
Viewers were surprised when the 39-year-old 'Firework' singer wasn’t addressed by her stage name after receiving the Video Vanguard award at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Wednesday, September 11.
The award, which honors lifetime achievement, was presented by her fiancé, 47-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star Orlando Bloom, who has been engaged to her since 2019.
The couple shares a four-year-old daughter, Daisy. Bloom began his speech by saying: “Give it up for our newest Video Vanguard, Katheryn Hudson,” and added, “You fell in love with her as Katy Perry, I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson.
"You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light and her unique sense of humour into every song she writes and every music video she creates.
"I know her as a mother, as a partner who brings that same sense of love and joy to our family.
"She loves with her whole heart and it’s kind of irresistible. Congratulations on this honour baby, I’m so proud of you."
After the touching speech, fans couldn’t believe that 'Katy Perry' wasn’t her real name.
One viewer commented: "So I’m today years old when I learned that Katy Perry’s real name is not Katy Perry… is Taylor the only artist who goes by her real name?"
Another added: “Guys I didn’t know Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry were married I was so confused on why he was calling her real name.”
A third comment read: “KATY PERRY ISN'T HER REAL NAME WHAT.”
After accepting her award, the 'I Kissed a Girl' singer joked: "Thank you, I did that all on my first day of my period, can you believe it?
"Thank you so much to MTV for believing in my weirdness from day one.
"There are so many things that have to align to have a long and successful career as an artist. There are no decades-long accidents.
"My Katy Cats, you stood by me for a lifetime and the LGBTQ community who I recognize I would not be here without.
"You showed me that you can be both kind and snatched.
"Thank you to Orlando for keeping me grounded, celebrated and doing the dishes.
"And lastly, for my Daisy, the only flower I'll ever need."
