It's fair to say that the last season of Game of Thrones must be one of the most hyped television shows ever. Fans all around the world are positively beside themselves with eagerness to discover what the ultimate fate of Westeros will be. Will the various vying factions be able to unite to defeat the Night King and his army of White Walkers? Or will the frozen undead bring an endless winter to the Seven Kingdoms and butcher the remainder of the cast? David Benioff and DB Weiss, the showrunners of the hit fantasy series, have been pretty secretive about details of the plot, but they have promised us an amazing conclusion.
Yet, their stony poker faces haven't stopped the fanbase from looking desperately for spoilers, and the community is starving for new details about season eight. Which is why an Instagram snap of some blood-spattered sneakers courtesy of Maisie Williams (aka: Arya Stark) has left them extremely intrigued.
Last week the Game of Thrones cast and crew held a wrap party for the end of the show, even though production on the season reportedly officially wasn't over until yesterday. Present on the last day of filming was Maisie Williams, who uploaded a picture to Instagram of her feet, and fans noticed that, either she'd been wading through ketchup all day, or that her white sneakers were actually drenched in fake blood (corn syrup and red dye in case any of you are squeamish).
Maisie captioned the picture: "Goodbye Belfast. Goodbye Arya. Goodbye game of thrones. What a joy I’ve had. here’s to the adventures to come #lastwomanstanding #barely#immasleepforthenextfouryears#justkiddingidontsleep." The hashtag "lastwomanstanding" was the one that caught social media's interest in particular. What/who does this refer to? Is it Maisie Williams talking about how she was the last cast member left at the shoot? Or is it an oblique reference to Arya's fate? It seems as though (typically) she'll get herself involved in some violent melee, where she might turn out to be the only survivor.
Recently, Maisie's fellow cast member and onscreen sister Sophie Turner also appeared to tease fans with some hints about the upcoming finale. In an interview with Digital Spy, Turner stated: "For me – without giving anything away, I guess – I was satisfied with how unpredictable the show’s ending really is. People have come up with so many fan theories about how it’s going to end, and who will end up where, and who will end up with who. It really is so unpredictable the way that it ends up. I’m very satisfied with that, and I think that the fans will be satisfied with that, too."
I don't know about you guys, but personally, I can't wait to see how it all ends. Unfortunately, we still have a long time to wait. The last season isn't due to air till 2019!
