Holland Taylor, 83, reveals why she and Sarah Paulson, 51, still live apart after 12 years of dating
Holland Taylor has opened up about why she and Sarah Paulson still don't live together, 12 years into their relationship.
Taylor, 83, and Paulson, 51, first met back in 2005 but didn't start dating until a decade later in early 2015, going public in March 2016.
While things have gone from strength to strength in the years that have followed, the couple have not yet chosen to share a permanent home base together as of yet.
Taylor revealed to host Drew Barrymore during a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show: "Well we do as much time as we possibly can, because work takes us apart constantly.
"But I have an apartment here [in New York City], and [Paulson] stays here in my apartment when she’s here."
She added that despite being an item for "12 years, going on", they each have their own separate homes in Los Angeles, though Paulson has been staying with her while waiting to move into a new property she has purchased.
Taylor explained: "In LA, I have a separate house from hers, but her new house, she hasn’t moved into.
"It’s been almost a year since she’s been staying in my house in LA, too. So we’re together as much as geography and our jobs let us be."
While it may not be a conventional approach for a long-term relationship, Paulson has previously credited living apart as the "secret" to lasting love.
She told the SmartLess podcast in 2024: "Yeah, we don’t live together. That’s the secret to it. We spend plenty of time together, but we don’t live in the same house.
"[We've] been together for a long time now. And part of it has to do with, we’re together when we want to be and we’re not when we don’t."
Paulson added that while she had experienced cohabiting with previous partners, Taylor "hasn't been in a tonne" of long-term relationships in the past.
She explained: "So to get to be her age and sort of not having really cohabited with someone for a long time — I think it was a lot to sort of have me and all my me-ness in her space."
When it was suggested that they could live in the same house but have separate bedrooms, Paulson revealed that wouldn't work for them.
"No, because my favourite thing to do — we fall asleep holding hands. I like to sleep near her," she revealed.
While their living arrangements aren't for everyone - both out of choice and financial necessity - it sounds like it works really well for them.
