The Euphoria star stated in a conversation with Elle magazine: “I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much.”
Bottom surgery refers to the gender-affirming operation that alters a person's genitals so they align with their gender identity.
She added: “For a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it.”

Hunter Schafer opens up about surgery
Schafer decided that a medical transition was right for her, though every trans person is different and may undergo a different journey.
She explained that evolving is the 'magical thing about queerness', adding: "On an ideological level, it’s about possibility and expansion and growth, and being on that journey and finding yourself."
The 27-year-old previously said that her gender identity was more fluid, admitting she is now somewhere 'flatter', revealing: “I’m a woman. I’m a girl.”
She said that she had to consider queerness as a philosophy, comparing it to 'how it applies and works in real life, in the context of the world that we’re living in'.
"I feel like there’s always a tension there," she added.
Schafer underwent the surgery in late 2025, renting a large apartment so that family and friends could visit while she was required to lie flat, sharing doctor's orders: “I think my limit was 150 steps per day, which is nothing.”

Schafer on not wanting her identity to eclipse her work
The US actress, who is set to star opposite Michelle Yeoh in the Amazon miniseries Blade Runner 2099, previously opened up on not wanting her gender to be the talking point of her work.
Speaking to GQ in 2024, she said that she even tried to avoid saying the word 'trans' during interviews.
"It has not just happened naturally by any means. If I let it happen, it would still be giving ‘Transsexual Actress’ before every article ever," she claimed.
Schafer said that while she's proud to be an icon for the community, she claimed of the word: “As soon as I say it, it gets blastoff.”
“It took a while to learn that and it also took a while to learn that I don’t want to be [reduced to] that, and I find it ultimately demeaning to me and what I want to do," she stated.
"Especially after high school, I was sick of talking about it. I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on."
