Her family confirmed her passing on Tuesday, August 25, prompting messages of grief from every corner of the entertainment industry, as well as political leaders and millions of fans across the globe.
Parton was widely celebrated not just for her six-decade music career, but also for her work as an actress, business owner, and philanthropist.
She sold more than 100 million records, earned 55 Grammy nominations, and created the Imagination Library, a program that has given away millions of free books to young children. Figures from all political backgrounds paid their respects, including President Donald Trump.
However, a public message shared by the president's daughter, Ivanka Trump, quickly triggered intense online debate. The reaction turned what was intended as a tribute into a heated point of discussion.
Ivanka Trump pays tribute to the late Dolly Parton
Ivanka Trump posted a message on X to honor Parton, focusing on a quote about acceptance and compassion. She wrote: “A couple years ago on @lexfridman podcast I cited a piece of wisdom from @DollyParton that has resonated within me since I first heard it. ‘I don’t criticize and condemn; I love and accept.’
“That quote, like so much of what made Dolly Parton an American icon, was deceptively simple — uncomplicated on its face but profound and deeply moving beneath the surface.
“Goodbye to a bright light. A peerless singer, incredible songwriter, gifted comic actress, tireless philanthropist, accomplished businesswoman and true original.
“We never met but I adored and admired Dolly greatly.”
Social media users slam Ivanka over one part of the tribute
While some social media users applauded the post, others quickly criticized the former White House adviser. Opponents argued that the message sounded hypocritical given her family's political platform. Many users accused her of using a message of acceptance while ignoring policies that critics feel run contrary to those words.
Social media commenters expressed their anger directly under her post. One user commented: “First, you didn’t write this. Secondly, your family is exactly what she tried to avoid. F*** off.”
Another written response stated: “Don’t even try, Eva Braun Barbie. Don’t even try to associate yourself or speak of her. You weren’t fit to breathe the same air as Dolly Parton. You and your family are against everything decent she worked for.”
A third critic added: “Dolly Parton was a kind and generous soul. You are a cruel and soulless grifter who helped your family steal money from your disgusting daddy’s fake foundation.” Another added simply: “This is disgusting. You should be ashamed. Hypocrite.”
Parton famously avoided partisan politics throughout her life, maintaining a broad fan base by focusing on positivity and charity. Even so, supporters noted her long history of backing inclusive causes, including her support for marginalized groups and the LGBTQ+ community.
