Hathaway appeared on The Tonight Show Featuring Jimmy Fallon to promote her movie The Idea of You, in which she plays Solène Marchand, a single 40-year-old mom who falls in love with the 24-year-old lead singer of a boy band, Hayes Campbell (played by Nicholas Galitzine).

The movie, which is based on a novel of the same title by Robinne Lee, earned itself a pretty impressive 81 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics branding it a "charming" and "worth the watch."

However, despite the movie being a total hit with people in the audience on the talk show, it seems as though they were blissfully unaware that the it is actually based on a book... that no one in the audience managed to read.

It all started when Hathaway was praising her co-star, stating that she immediately knew he was "the one" for the role during his audition.

"Did you know when he was auditioning that this is the guy?" asked Fallon to which the actress responded: "Oh yeah... I actually burst out laughing when he walked in because- has anyone read the book?"

Hathaway clearly wanted to give some context to her anecdote, but she was met with silence.

The star gasped and covered her mouth with her hand in awkwardness as Fallon tried to gain control of the situation.

"No, we don’t read," he joked. "This is The Tonight Show. You want to go to Stephen Colbert if you want to get people to read books. Lame! We do audible here."

Hathaway burst out laughing, as did the audience, making the moment a little less awkward for everyone involved.

"The book is fabulous," the Mothers' Instinct star confirmed.

Fans couldn't help but comment on the interaction online.

"She's amazing and handled that awkwardness so gracefully," wrote one person after watching the segment on YouTube, while another added: "That was one of Jimmy's best... No we don't read at the perfect time."

A third also commented writing: "Shows that Jimmy can be a great host! To dissolve the tension!"

And this user chimed in stating: "Lmao I love that no one whooped when she asked if anyone read the book, even if they actually hadn't. It was honest, and it made for a funny moment."

Another praised the host again commenting: "When he said 'no, we don’t read' I almost spill my water."

The Idea Of You is available to watch on Amazon Prime.
