Interview Turns Tense Over Nicole Kidman’s Steamy Roles

Urban, 57, was calling into Mix 102.3’s Hayley & Max in the Morning on Tuesday when hosts Hayley Peterson and Max Burford warned him they had a “very tricky … deeply personal question.”

Peterson admitted feeling “uncomfortable” asking it, prompting Burford to continue:

“What does Keith Urban think when he sees his beautiful wife with beautiful younger men like Zac Efron having these beautiful love scenes on TV?”

The question referred to Kidman’s 2024 Netflix film A Family Affair, where the 58-year-old Oscar winner starred opposite Zac Efron, 37, in a romantic role. Kidman and Efron’s on-screen chemistry in the project, which featured several intimate scenes, had drawn public attention when it was released.

Urban Disconnects Call After Question

Urban did not respond to the question before the interview was suddenly cut off, with a producer revealing that the singer and his team “disconnected from Zoom.”

“I think his team hung up on us because they didn’t want us to ask that question,” the producer shared, as Peterson exclaimed: “He’s gone!”

Peterson and Burford speculated that the question likely prompted the abrupt end to the call, with Burford jokingly asking, “Does Keith Urban hate us? Do we have beef with Keith Urban?”

Kidman Has Spoken About Filming Intimate Scenes

While Urban may avoid discussing his wife’s on-screen intimacy, Kidman has been candid about the challenges of filming steamy scenes in recent years.

In October 2024, Kidman told The Sun that she experienced “burnout” while filming the erotic thriller Babygirl with co-star Harris Dickinson. The A24 film, directed by Halina Reijn, follows Kidman’s character, Romy, a married tech CEO who begins an affair with a younger intern, played by Dickinson.

“There were times when we were shooting where I was like, ‘I don’t want to orgasm anymore. Don’t come near me. I hate doing this,’” Kidman recalled, adding, “I don’t care if I am never touched again in my life!”

She described the filming process as emotionally draining, saying:“There was an enormous amount of sharing and trust and then frustration. It’s like, ‘Don’t touch me.’ … It was so present all the time for me that it was almost like a burnout.”

A Long-Standing Marriage in the Spotlight

Kidman and Urban have been married since June 2006, recently celebrating their 19th wedding anniversary. They share two daughters, Sunday, 16, and Faith, 14.

“Happy Anniversary Baby,” Kidman posted on Instagram last month, celebrating their nearly two decades together with a red heart emoji.

Despite the couple’s long-lasting partnership, Kidman’s high-profile projects, including roles with romantic plotlines alongside younger co-stars like Efron and Dickinson, continue to draw curiosity from fans and the media.

However, Babygirl writer-director Halina Reijn has argued that it shouldn't raise any eyebrows. In fact, she says "it should completely be normalized."

"If we see a movie where the male actor is the same age as the female actor, we find that odd. Which is insane," the 49-year-old told W Magazine. "It should completely be normalized that the age gaps switch and that women have different relationships.

"We’re not trapped in a box anymore," the writer continued. "We internalize the male gaze, we internalize patriarchy, and we need to free ourselves from it. It’s really hard."
