Lili Reinhart is part of a new breed of celebrity that strives to break down what it's really like to be in the public eye. The Riverdale actress is known for being outspoken about everything from her struggles with mental health and body image to the frequency of her acne breakouts - and naturally, it's earned her a legion of fans.
The 22-year-old has certainly made a habit of keeping it real when it comes to her adult acne. She's shared un-retouched photos of her pimples on Instagram, and spoken candidly about how one's physical appearance can affect their self-esteem. Now, in an new interview with Glamour, the actress opened up about how acne still has the power to affect her day, despite her continued efforts to normalise the common skin condition.
"I cried last night to my mom over FaceTime because of how ugly I felt I looked," Lili told the publication. "My skin has caused me a lot of anxiety and sadness. I have a specific type of body dysmorphia that stems from acne. I see any acne on my face as an obsessive thing. [It's] the only thing I can think about, and it makes me want to hide."
However, Lili - who is reportedly dating her Riverdale co-star, Cole Spouse, then went onto say how the support of her fans has made things a little easier. "Lorde actually messaged me on Instagram when I had spoken out about my acne, and she was like, 'Girl, I feel you. I'm totally on the same page as you,'" Lili revealed. "It was really comforting and very sweet of her."
But while the actress is committed to speaking out about things like her acne, struggles with confidence and mental health, she told Glamour that she still ensures to draw a strict boundary between her public and personal life. "I haven't really shown the super vulnerable side of myself to my audience. If I did that, I wouldn't have anything left for myself," she stated.
"I talk about my mental health. I talk about depression. But I'm private about the things that I want to be private about." She added, "Sometimes I feel like I look like sh*t. Sometimes I don't want to talk to anyone. And it's like, I'm allowed to have those days. I'm not going to apologize for that."
Lili has previously opened up about how her acne affects her on-screen makeup routine, disclosing that she prefers to do her own makeup because she knows her skin "better than anyone else". But still, she admits that she can feel really down before filming because of it.
“Nothing is worse than when I have a breakout and I have to be in front of a camera; it makes my anxiety a 10 out of 10," she asserted. "I had a bad breakout on my forehead two weeks ago while filming and I woke up that morning knowing it was going to be a hard day, which is really sad because I’m letting a breakout control my mood."
Good on you, Lili, for speaking so honestly!
