Big birthday wishes are in order to Nicole Richie’s daughter, Harlow Winter Kate, who recently turned 18.
The eldest child of The Simple Life star and her husband, rocker Joel Madden, marked the occasion by debuting a bold new look of jet-black hair, and with her mom confirming she now goes by a different name.
The newly-minted adult doesn’t share a huge amount on social media but revealed a few months back she had swapped her softer brunette tones for raven tresses.
However, the transformation really caught attention was when tagged her account, @katemaddennn and confirming her new moniker - going by her middle name.
“My favorite person in the world is now 18. Happy birthday @katemaddennn. I [love] you,” Nicole wrote alongside a photo of her daughter.
Nicole, 44, and her husband Joel, 46, also joined forces for the occasion, sharing a sweet carousel of throwback pics captioned simply: “18 years of you.”
The couple also share a younger son, Sparrow James Midnight, who is 16. Nicole is officially deep in her raising teens era, which she’s previously said is her favourite stage of parenting.
Speaking on The Today Show, Nicole admitted she remembers being a teenager a little too well.
“I just so clearly remember being 16 that it’s actually surprising how quickly I can go back there,” she said.
“When my daughter’s telling me drama with her friends, I go, ‘I remember. Laila Heckmath did that to me.’ I remember first and last names, so it’s fun. It’s wild. And just the best.”
Kate and Sparrow stepped out to support their mom at the premiere of Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead in 2024. “Everyone came, the whole fam came. It was very sweet,” she said on Today.
“They are teens, so they’re pretty chill about it, but they were happy to be there, and they did tell me I did a good job [in the movie]. So I was like, ‘I will take that. Thank you very much.’”
While Nicole is the epitome of Mother Earth vibes now, anyone with access to the internet might have seen snippets of her hilarious chaotic early 2000s years when she hung out with Paris Hilton.
“They know everything I did. I knew before I had them that I was going to have to be transparent with them about who I was,” she told Glamour. “And I’ve actually found freedom in that.
"I didn’t want my kids having some big discovery about me. And I’ve always been very open and honest with my kids and hope that they are open and honest with me.”
Despite The Simple Life enjoying a revival on TikTok, Nicole has revealed her teens are not lining up to binge-watch it. In fact, she says, it’s mostly a source of embarrassment for them.
“The Simple Life is apparently having a big moment on TikTok, so they do tell me that they watch clips on TikTok,” she told Variety in 2024. “Their friends watch it. I get a lot of eye rolls in my house all the time. It’s right on brand.”
