Warning issued over Kanye and Kim’s daughter North West’s 'risky' body modification

An expert has issued a warning to young fans not to copy North West’s latest body modification, describing it as a “particularly risky” trend that could lead to serious complications.

The 12-year-old daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West is known for her bold fashion choices and early influence on pre-teen style.

But her latest look (a finger piercing) has sparked fresh debate among parents and health professionals alike.

North West’s Daring Look Sparks Debate Online

North has faced constant attention over her appearance in recent months, from her colorful hairstyles to her fake tattoos and statement outfits.

But the backlash intensified this week after new photos surfaced of her finger piercing on social media.

Images show two silver studs embedded in her skin and another design featuring a blue stone centered on her middle finger.

One post even appeared to reveal the piercing instrument puncturing her skin, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the process.

The piercing in question is believed to be a dermal piercing, a style that sits flat on the surface of the body rather than passing through it. North was first seen wearing it back in August.

What Is a Dermal Piercing, and Why It’s Considered Risky

According to Healthline, dermal piercings carry a "high risk of complications" and require "meticulous aftercare".

Because they are placed on flat areas like fingers or cheeks, they’re more prone to infection, tissue damage, scarring, and displacement.

These risks are heightened when the piercing is on a finger, an area constantly exposed to dirt, moisture, and friction.

Jewellery Expert Calls Finger Piercings ‘Particularly Risky’ for Kids

Jewellery expert Nilesh Rakholia, founder of British brand Abelini, said that while personal style and creativity are important, finger piercings come with dangers, especially for someone as young as North.

“While jewellery in all its forms is a powerful way of expressing individuality, finger piercings might look striking, but they come with added risks that people, especially someone so young, really need to be aware of,” Rakholia said.

“At just 12 years old, North is still developing, and any piercing at this age requires careful consideration.”

He added that the location of the piercing makes it especially hazardous: “It’s constantly exposed to knocks, dirt and bacteria, making the risks of infection and complications far greater than with more traditional piercings.”

Trends Shouldn’t Outweigh Health, Expert Warns

Rakholia praised younger generations for embracing creativity through fashion and jewellery but emphasized that safety must always come first.

“Trends should never outweigh health and wellbeing,” he said.

“For anyone, particularly young teens, considering a piercing like this, it’s vital to use a licensed professional, follow strict aftercare routines, and be mindful of the often lengthy and difficult healing period.”

He explained that dermal piercings need regular cleaning, protection from irritation, and constant monitoring to ensure safe healing.

“Trends come and go,” he concluded, “but safe practices and responsible timing should always be the foundation of enjoying jewellery in the long term.”

Why North West’s Piercing Caused Such a Stir

Rakholia believes North’s piercing became so controversial not only because it’s “unusual and eye-catching” but also because it’s being worn by someone so young and so visible in the public eye.

“Children in the public eye are often on the receiving end of strong opinions,” he said.

“While it’s important to approach these conversations with empathy, when it comes to body modifications at such a young age, health and safety must always take priority."
