This year's Oscars ceremony was full of awkward and cringy moments.

The Acadamy Awards took place yesterday (April 25) in Los Angeles, and while many guests and nominees tuned in via Zoom, the organizers still tried to have a plentiful number of in-person attendees, which resulted in many an awkward moment.

Brad Pitt's attempt at pronouncing Maria Bakalova

One of the breakout stars from 2020 was Maria Bakalova, who starred alongside Sacha Baron Cohen in Borat 2. However, the Bulgarian actress's name proved to be too much of a mouthful for Brad Pitt who said what we can only describe as Maria Bakalava.

The fail did not go unnoticed by fans on Twitter.

One wrote: "Maria Bakalova's face: It's Brad Pitt but he mispronounced my name but also it's Brad Pitt."

A second added alongside two laughing emojis: "Not Brad Pitt horribly mispronouncing Maria Bakalova’s name on live television."

Daniel Kaluuya thanking his parents for having sex

If it wasn't for the birds and the bees, none of us would be here, and in his acceptance speech, Daniel Kaluuya decided to thank his parents for doing it way back when.

His mother's reaction over the live stream was something else!

A Soul winner saying, "I'm not supposed to be talking "while accepting an award

Soul won the award for Best Animated Feature, and it was collected by producer Dana Leigh Murray and codirector Pete Docter. Despite Pete being the one who was meant to talk, she decided to thank her friends and family anyway, then awkwardly said: "I'm not supposed to be talking!"

Marlee Matlin's ASL Presentation

In a real step forward for accessibility, Marlee Matlin presented an award in American Sign Language, but it did not quite go to plan for Matlin.

The show cut to an on-screen graphic as she signed, meaning that people couldn't see it.

Reacting to the disappointing fail, one Twitter user wrote: "Having Marlee Matlin present an award, then cut away from her entirely while she's speaking so you just hear the interpreter's voice is...a choice. #Oscars"

Andra Day and Glenn Close playing the music game

For some bizarre reasons, there was a music trivia quiz at last night's event, and Andra Day swore when she answered a question, forcing the producers to bleep her. Then the same thing happened to Glenn Close when she tried to answer.

Glenn Close's twerking

Then there was, of course, Glenn's twerking, which also managed to steal the show right after she got beeped.

The unexpected win

Many people were expecting Chadwick Boseman to posthumously win Best Actor, which was the last award presented. But in an unexpected twist, it was given to Anthony Hopkins instead, who was not at the event.

Sadly, many of Bosewick's fans have since taken to social media to voice their displeasure at the star missing out on the win.

Hopkins went on to pay tribute to Boseman in his belated acceptance speech.
