The Duke of Sussex broke down on stage as he recalled Meghan Markle's pregnancy at the WellChild Awards.
The 35-year-old was comforted by his co-host, Gaby Roslin, as he apologised to attendees for getting emotional. He spoke about how he knew at last year's charity event that the Duchess of Sussex was pregnant, but that the news had not been announced publicly yet - something that was greeted by rapturous applause.
Watch the emotional moment below:"Last year when my wife and I attended we knew we were expecting our first child – no one else did at the time, but we did," Harry said. "And I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day, and more so, what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time."
"And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heart strings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own," he continued.
This comes after the Duke of Sussex published a damning statement on his and his wife's website. He stated that the "relentless propaganda" about Meghan was bullying, and went onto extol the human cost of such treatment. He cited the British press' positive portrayal of Meghan during their official royal tour of South Africa, which he deemed to be hypocritical, as one of the reasons why he decided to take action now.
The Duchess of Sussex has been the subject of criticism since the announcement of her engagement. Backlash has been motivated by her appearance - which some commentators decry as being racially charged - to how the couple spend their money, and how they choose to travel.
