A video revealing that Jada Pinkett Smith had branded her planned 40th birthday party a "ridiculous display" of her husband Will Smith's "ego" has resurfaced in the wake of the Oscars drama from last month.

During a 2018 episode of Pinkett Smith's Red Table Talk, on which the King Richard star appeared as a guest, the 53-year-old actor shared a story about his now 50-year-old wife's 40th birthday.

On the show, Smith recalled: "The day after her 37th birthday, I hired a team to orchestrate her 40th birthday."

Turning to their 21-year-old daughter Willow, he continued: "I hired a documentary team, I traced mommy's family roots. Her 40th birthday was going to be my thing!"

The Oscar winner also revealed he had hired R&B star Mary J Blige to perform at the party.

He said: "It was going to be the thing that lifted her out of this mid-life crisis. It was going to be my deepest most beautiful proclamation of love."

The actor went on: "I had Mary J. Blige performing and the whole time I was like the little boy who wants mommy to say everything was wonderful."

However, the disappointed actor then recalled how Pinkett Smith told him that the entire event he'd planned was the "most ridiculous display" of his ego.

“She told me that the party was the most ridiculous display of my ego,” Smith said. “Crushed, right? And to this day I know I was crushed because it was true. It wasn’t a party for her.”

The apologetic actor went on to recall: "I snapped in front of Willow — it was the only time in her childhood that she ever saw me snap. And I saw her look and Willow starts crying and I was like ‘baby I’m sorry, sorry’ and she was like ‘just figure it out, you guys just please figure it out, figure it out.'”

However, after the video resurfaced, many Redditors took Smith's side, with one person commenting: "You can't do s*** for the ungrateful."

Another wrote: "Imagine being married to someone that spent literally years planning a special event for you and instead of gratitude you say it’s all to feed their ego… marital bliss."

A third added: "Treat her like she's a celebrity, she'll treat you like a fan."
