'Disgusting' Russell Brand interaction with Katy Perry on red carpet resurfaces after comedian's rape conviction
A questionable exchange between Russell Brand and his ex-wife Katy Perry during their marriage has gone viral following his arrest.
The British comedian and actor, 51, was this week found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault offences against four women between 2004 and 2009, and is facing a lengthy prison sentence.
He was found not guilty on two other counts of rape and one of attempted indecent assault, as a judge told the Get Him to the Greek star to expect a 'significant custodial term'.
Brand first met singer Perry, 42, in mid-2009 when she filmed a cameo for Get Him to the Greek, which was later cut from the movie.
The pair crossed paths again at the 2009 MTV VMAs in September and began dating, getting engaged in India on New Year's Eve 2009, before marrying there in a Hindu ceremony in October 2010.
Just a year later, on December 30, 2011, Brand filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, and their divorce was finalized in July 2012.
A video of the former couple on the red carpet at the 2010 Vanity Fair Oscar Party has gone viral after his conviction.
The pair are seen walking down the red carpet and stopping for an interview with British morning show GMTV on their thoughts about the Academy Awards.
Brand begins to answer as Perry jokingly interrupts, saying: "You didn’t watch it!"
He then responded with a joke, before the interviewer said to Perry: "You just put him in it right now," to which Brand solemnly replies: "I did watch the Oscars."
Perry then adds: "I call him on his bulls**t," before Brand quickly interjects: "Don't swear," as the interview was going out on television in the UK.
As the reporter continues asking questions, Brand is seen bringing out a small rectangular object that says the word "obey" on it, and holding it up in front of Perry.
Afterwards, she appears to go quiet as Brand shares his thoughts on the winners, before the reporter asks: "Katy, how do you deal with this guy?"
The singer stutters for a moment before responding: "No, he’s actually hilarious," to which the reporter quips: "I’m glad you find him funny," as Brand leads her away down the carpet.
Viewers flooded the comments, writing: "What a bizarre interaction. She’s monitoring his reaction constantly, her eyes keep checking his face for signs that he’s not upset."
Others added: "Notice how the interviewer at the end said I’m glad you find him funny," and: "My jaw actually dropped."
Another wrote: "He was annoyed because she was getting more attention than him his face when Katie was addressed first lol."
Someone else commented: "WTH is up with that obey sticker is that a real thing?", and: "What is the obey tag?"
Some pointed out that the 'obey' tag may have been related to a clothing brand by street artist Shepard Fairey which was popular at the time.
Though Perry has not spoken publicly about Brand's arrest, she addressed their relationship issues in her 2012 documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me, in which the couple struggled with conflicting schedules and Perry not being ready to have children.
