It's 2018 now, and tattoos are finally losing the stigma that used to be attached to them. More and more people are deciding to decorate their bodies with ink, and even some of our favourite celebrities have started flashing their tats at red carpet events and on social media.
One such A-lister is Scarlett Johansson, who first bared her striking back tattoo back in August at the Avengers: Infinity War premiere in Los Angeles. Fans spotted the sizeable black and white floral design, but it was unclear whether the ink was real or just for a role - but now it seems that we have our answer.
Johansson made her red carpet debut with boyfriend, Colin Jost, at the Emmys on Monday, and they looked very much in love. What was of more interest to the actress's eagle-eyed fans, however, was her colourless tattoo, which was on full display.
This isn't Johansson's first tattoo. She has a rising sun on her forearm, a bracelet on her wrist, a horseshoe and the words "lucky you" on her ribcage, and an illustration of a lamb on her back, under the new ink.
But what makes this new tat more special than the rest, however, is the actresses's special connection to the flower. She has a 3-year-old daughter, called Rose, with her ex-husband of three years, Romain Dauriac, so roses clearly have symbolic value for her.
Johansson joins a slew of high-profile celebrities who also have giant tattoos. Ben Affleck has a full-colour back tattoo of a phoenix rising from the ashes. While the actor claimed it was only temporary, and for a role back in 2016, he was spotted at a beach in March of 2018, with the ink very much intact.
Angelina Jolie is another example. Her back is covered with a 12-by-8-inch Bengal tiger, a Buddhist Pali incantation, and three sizeable, intricate tattoos which were created by a monk in Thailand, and allegedly "bind" her to her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, who she shares six children with.
While spectators gawked at the 33-year-old's new tattoo, Johansson was wholly engrossed in her boyfriend, Colin Jost, whom she has been involved with for over a year.
The actress was not nominated for an award at the ceremony, but attended to support Jost as he was hosting the Emmys with his Saturday Night Live co-star, Michael Che.
The pair were first linked together in May of 2017, after they were seen kissing at a SNL after-party. They did not confirm their relationship until December of that year, when they attended the American Museum of Natural History Gala together in New York.
Johansson was previously married to fellow actor Ryan Reynolds. They split in 2011, and the mother-of-one began a relationship with journalist Romain Dauriac the following year. They welcomed a daughter, Rose, in 2014, before calling it quits two years later.
