Whoopi Goldberg has been slammed for asking a "disgusting" question to Alyssa Farah Griffin during an episode of The View.

The incident unfolded during a conversation about the state of America, as Goldberg, known for her unfiltered remarks, veered off-topic and turned her attention to Griffin, 34.

"Too much has happened in the country for the rot to have not been there," remarked Goldberg, "And it doesn't have to be black folks or Native American folks. It's folks who come from other places."

Goldberg, known for her candidness, continued to express her dismay at the way people in the United States were treating each other. However, she suddenly interrupted her own thoughts by turning towards an unsuspecting Griffin and asking: "Are you pregnant?"

Griffin, clearly taken aback, gasped in shock and swiftly replied, "No! Oh my God."

"You can't say that with my mother-in-law here, who has been dying for me to get pregnant," Griffin added.

Following Goldberg's blunt inquiry, the studio erupted into chaos, with some audience members expressing their delight while her co-hosts attempted to make sense of the situation.

"Why would you say that?" the bewildered hosts questioned Goldberg. The camera briefly panned to the show's executive producer, Brian Teta, who muttered something into his headset.

After calm was restored to the show, Griffin turned to Goldberg and asked if she looked pregnant, to which Goldberg replied: "Yes!"

"I just got a vibe," Goldberg said in an attempt to smooth over the awkward moment as Griffin asked if she had "the glow."

Goldberg then began to apologize profusely, but Sunny Hostin jumped into the conversation and jokingly suggested they take bets on Griffin's potential pregnancy.

"I'm very open to being pregnant soon," Griffin explained "But I am not blessed to be pregnant yet." She went on to mention that she and her husband were "thinking about it."

The exchange didn't go down too well online, as one person slammed Goldberg, saying: "This is so wrong. Whoopi is a mess. Even if she were pregnant, she would have forced her to announce with that question. She could ask during break or before the start of the show. Such a disgusting behavior."

Some defended the start, as another tweeted: "Those of us at a certain age lose out filters. I've blurted out things I would never had said when I was younger and gave a s***. Whoopi gonna be Whoopi. It was a bit rude but oh well."

It's usually a golden rule that you never ask a woman if she's pregnant or not, but if anyone can get away with it, it's probably Whoopi Goldberg.
