Since the death of Nirvana frontman and alternative heartthrob Kurt Cobain in 1994, many fans have remained suspicious about how he died.
Cobain, 27, was found in the greenhouse of his Seattle home with a 20-gauge shotgun across his chest and a suicide note nearby.
A toxicology report later revealed a high concentration of heroin and traces of Valium in his system at the time of his death.
Now, 31 years later, amateur sleuths online have called on the Seattle Police Department and the Governor of Washington to reopen the case to find out if his untimely death really was self-inflicted.
In a YouTube video posted by an account with 2.78 million subscribers called Brew Solves, a narrator asks: “But what if that narrative is completely wrong?
“What if the evidence told a completely different story? What if the institutions designed to find the truth simply didn't bother to look closely because the story of a doomed rock star was just too convenient?”
According to the anonymous account: “For thirty years, independent investigators, forensic experts, and even Cobain's own family members have pointed to ignored evidence and massive physical impossibilities in the original investigation. Only to be dismissed as conspiracy theorists.”
According to the investigative video, a team of independent forensic specialists published a peer-reviewed study re-examining the original autopsy and crime scene data last year. Allegedly, the report established that Cobain was murdered.
The theory that Kurt Cobain was murdered argues that his death was staged to appear as suicide; the people behind the YouTube video point out that several pieces of evidence contradict the coroner’s ruling.
One major issue is Cobain’s reported morphine level of 1.52 mg per litre of blood. The video argues that this was an extremely high concentration that would have caused unconsciousness almost immediately, making it almost impossible for Cobain to inject the heroin and then shoot himself.
However, it acknowledges uncertainty over whether the test measured free or total morphine.
It explains: “Free morphine counts only the active molecules, essentially the amount of morphine ingested in a recent span of time. Total morphine includes the molecules that build up over time in chronic users. So if that 1.52 figure was a free morphine, it was many times over the fatal threshold.”
Also, the video notes that no usable fingerprints were found on the shotgun, ammunition box, or pen, apart from prints belonging to police officers.
This is suspicious because Cobain would have had to handle the weapon and ammunition.
The video also addresses long-standing concerns over Cobain’s suicide note. Handwriting experts cited in the video allegedly concluded that the final four lines, which refer to ending his life, were written by someone else.
Marcel Matley, a forensic document examiner, said: "The last four lines of the letter were written by a different person."
Also, Reginald Alton, an Oxford University Dawn and manuscript authenticator, found “more than a dozen discrepancies between the main text and the final lines.”
