Chrissy Teigen is being widely criticized for hosting a lavish Squid Game-themed birthday party with her wealthy celebrity pals.

The former model, 35, is being called out by fans on social media for "failing to understand" the meaning behind the Netflix hit, which highlights the exploitation of the poor by the rich.

The celebrity chef sparked major backlash after she posted several images from her party of herself and her celebrity guests dressed up as Squid Game characters and imitating some of the lethal games featured in the show.

The hugely popular Korean Netflix series - which has become the most-watched show on the platform in more than 90 countries - centers around a group of 456 people who risk their lives as part of a mysterious survival show in a bid to win $38,460,271.20 (₩45.6 billion).

The game's financially indebted players willfully participate in rounds of deadly children's games in a desperate bid to win a huge cash prize.

Taking to Instagram to share images from her pricey bash, Teigen wrote: "My dream came true of watching my friends fight to the death! dunk tank, musical chairs, hide and seek followed by a very riveting final game of pin the tail on the donkey."

Fans were quick to point out the model's "tone deaf" approach, with many slamming Teigen for failing to understand the point of the show.

"This girl has continually proven to be tone deaf and crass. I believed her the first time! #chrissyteigen," wrote one critic.

Another added: "Thousands of people yelled at me on this app for calling Chrissy Teigen tone deaf and now she’s hosting a Squid Game party for herself and her rich friends."

A third wrote: "It amazes me that every few months Chrissy Teigen must demonstrate that she is the most tone deaf person in the world."

While a fourth tweeted: "The simply unmatched irony of john legend and chrissy teigen hosting a squid game party for all their rich celeb friends >>>"

Another then added: "Nothing says 'I didn’t understand Squid Game' like Chrissy Teigen hosting a Squid Game Party."

"Ok but like why don’t I see Twitter roasting Chrissy teigen for this absolutely tone deaf gross a** squid games party? Or did I miss it," another wrote.
