Damar Hamlin has shared his first photo from his hospital bed as he continues his recovery from his cardiac arrest last week.

The 24-year-old Buffalo Bills player collapsed on January 2 after making a routine tackle on Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins.

Per CNN, Hamlin was given life-saving CPR on the field before being transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he had to be resuscitated again.

Dr. Deepak Bhatt, a top cardiologist at Mount Sinai Heart in New York City, explained to the Daily Mail how Hamlin's injury was one-in-264 million: "The first thought that occurred to me was that it was something called commotio cordis. It really refers to the classic situation of injury to the chest.

"This is usually in baseball when someone hits a line into the pitcher's chest and that sudden impact can trigger abnormal heart rhythms. The only way to come out of that is to deliver an electric shock and perform CPR."

Thankfully, since the terrifying ordeal last week, Hamlin has been making positive steps toward recovery and even posted on his Instagram story an image of himself smiling while face-timing friends with the caption: "Back working, back smiling!!!"

Since then, the Bills player has uploaded his first image from his hospital bed where he can be seen sitting up and making a heart gesture with his hands.

He is joined by members of his family and the trio is wearing shirts that read "love for Damar" with the number 3 that he wears in the NFL.

He tagged his team in the post and commented: "Gametime!", indicating that he watched his teammates beat the New England Patriots 35-23.

The game opened with a touching ceremony for Hamlin and was quickly followed by a play that some people are comparing to a scene from a movie.

Immediately after kick-off, Nyheim Hines for the Bills received the ball and turned on the afterburners to score a 96-yard touchdown.

"NFL script writers going crazy with the season finale", said one viewer, with another adding: "Buffalo gonna win Super Bowl like a movie."

Hamlin had initially had a breathing tube to support his recovery from the ordeal, but began communicating with family and friends after it was removed.

In a statement on Friday, the Bills revealed that Hamlin "continues to progress remarkably in his recovery."

NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe also added at the time that he'd spoken to Hamlin's family and said: "They are absolutely elated this morning, emotional that he's had that breathing tube out, that he's had conversations with what they've described as his brothers.

"They said, 'Look, we cannot describe the emotion as anything other than elated.'"

We're sure Hamlin watched the game with great joy, and we wish him all the best during his recovery.
