Johnny Depp's ex-fiancée Jennifer Grey reflected on her brief engagement to the actor in her new memoir, Out of the Corner.
Per The Independent, Grey, 62, first met Depp, 58, in 1989 after a friend set them up on a blind date. Their relationship began soon after she broke off a previous engagement with actor Matthew Broderick, now 60.
The Dirty Dancing star described their first date in her memoir, writing: “We ate, talked, drank Jack Daniel’s, laughed our asses off, took cigarette breaks midcourse. He was so ridiculously beautiful. And surprisingly open, funny, quirky, and sweet.”
She then revealed that the Pirates in the Caribbean star proposed to her within two weeks of meeting her. He also got her a dog "to keep her company" whilst he was out of town.
Grey shared an account of their relationship - according to The Independent - as she wrote: "Johnny was commuting every week back and forth from Vancouver but had begun more and more regularly to be getting into trouble: fights in bars, skirmishes with cops. He'd started missing his flights home to LA having overslept or, when he did come home, he'd be crazy jealous and paranoid about what I'd been up to while he was gone."
The Golden Globe nominee even offered an explanation for his supposedly rampant behavior, saying: "I attributed his ill temper and unhappiness to him feeling miserable and powerless to get off [the TV series] 21 Jump Street.”
Grey broke off her engagement with the actor just before her 29th birthday. In her memoir, she wrote that she ended things with him by leaving a note in his hotel room after he left for a meeting one day and didn't come back or contact her. Their engagement only lasted for nine months.
Per Insider, the actor shared a portion of her journal on how she felt about Depp at the beginning of their relationship: "On August 12, I wrote in my journal, 'I'm in love, pretty sure for the first time in my life ... He's kind, funny, smart, moral, thoughtful, respectful."
Depp has been appearing in court in recent weeks for a defamation lawsuit he's brought against his ex-wife, Amber Heard.
Grey's memoir Out of the Corner is out now.
