Hilary Duff got a birthday card she wasn't expecting this year, and it's all thanks to her five-year-old daughter, Banks.

Being a parent comes with a lot of joy and many hilarious moments, from witnessing their first smiles and first steps, to watching your little ones turn into their own independent personalities.

And with increasing independence comes the need to have their own autonomy to pick things they like, from what to wear each day to what birthday card to get their beloved parent.

So it's no wonder little Banks was allowed to choose her own card for her mom - but the one she got Hilary ended up being absolutely hilarious, even if the joke went right over Banks' head.

Hilary's husband Matthew Koma took to Instagram in September to reveal the hilarious birthday card their eldest daughter chose for Hilary's 36th birthday.

The five-year-old chose a card with a picture of a beautifully iced cake with sprinkles on it for her mom - so far so good.

However, what she failed to realize was the message piped on the card was... not so sweet, as the red writing icing read: "Happy Birthday D***head".

Say what you really think, Banks...

Matthew, 36, shared the brilliant moment on Instagram, writing alongside it: "Banks picked this out by herself for @hilaryduff."

He then clarified: "She can't read yet."

Hilary, thankfully, loved the card when she received it, revealing on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Thursday that it was the "best birthday card."

She added that Matthew had been "so excited" for her to see it, revealing: "He took her to CVS or I don't know where they bought the card and he was like, 'Banks got you the best birthday card.'

"Thank God it didn't have confetti, that's my worst nightmare is when you open and there's, like, glitter everywhere."

Revealing what she was expecting, Hilary continued: "[I thought it] was gonna, like, sing to me or something. And I was really surprised. Love it. Had to post it."

Seth then joked that Matthew should have made Banks write "Happy birthday d***head" inside the card as well, joking: "[She should have wrote it] inside of the card too, so you saw it on the outside, and then you saw it again in her handwriting. Like, so she's like, 'No, it wasn't a mistake, that was the sentiment.'"

As well as Banks, Hilary shares a two-year-old daughter called Mae with Matthew, and is also mom to an 11-year-old son called Luca, who she shared with her ex-husband Mike Comrie.

She revealed that she always wanted to be a young parent, saying on the Good Guys podcast with Josh Peck and Ben Soffer in March: "It was hard cause I didn't have any friends that were having kids yet. But I just like figured it out and loved it. I love being a mom so much."

Hilary acknowledged that having her first child at 25 was "young, for sure," however, she added: "I wouldn't change it at all."
