John Legend has shared an adorable first photo of his family after welcoming his fourth child via surrogate.
The singer's model wife, Chrissy Teigen, shared the exciting news with her 42 million Instagram followers on Wednesday (June 29) in a touching post where she wrote that she had "always wanted four children."
Her post started: "For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted four children. As a little girl, 2 glow worms and 2 cabbage patch dolls were perpetually in my arms, helping me stir in my pretend kitchen."
The TV personality then spoke about the son the couple lost back in September 2020. "After losing Jack, I didn't think I'd be able to carry any more babies on my own, she wrote. "To be honest, I've personally blocked out a lot of my mindset during that time, but one clear memory is being surrounded by people who wanted to make sure I wouldn't go through that pain and loss again."
Teigen then announced that, after being in talks with a surrogacy agency, they met a woman - the "perfect match" named Alexandra, who became pregnant with the stars' child. "We were overjoyed to learn Alexandra had become pregnant with a little boy. Our little boy," she continued.
She added: "Just minutes before midnight on June 19th, I got to witness the most beautiful woman, my friend, our surrogate, give birth amidst a bit of chaos, but with strength and pure joy and love. Our hearts, and our home, are officially full. And to our Jack, we know both their angel kisses are from you," Teigen concluded the post.
Legend, 44, also took to social media to post some happy snaps of himself with his growing family - captioning an image of himself with his four children: "Wren Alexander Stephens, our new love."
The new arrival in the Legend family comes less than six months after they welcomed their third child, Esti. Two years before, in 2020, Teigen suffered the loss of her unborn son, Jack, at 20 weeks which was originally announced as a miscarriage.
However, late last year she revealed during a summit in Beverly Hills that Jack's death had actually been the result of a life-saving abortion (though she hadn't been aware of this at the time) after Teigen suffered from a partial placenta eruption, which occurs when the placenta detaches from the womb, causing the unborn baby to suffer oxygen deprivation and the mother to have heavy bleeding.
She said: "Let's just call it what it was: It was an abortion. An abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance. And to be honest, I never, ever put that together until, actually, a few months ago." The former model then added that she felt sympathy for the emotional decisions women must make when terminating their pregnancies - with Legend helping her realize that she was included in this percentage of women.
"I fell silent, feeling weird that I hadn't made sense of it that way. I told the world we had a miscarriage, the world agreed we had a miscarriage, all the headlines said it was a miscarriage," she shared, before stating: "And I became really frustrated that I didn't, in the first place, say what it was, and I felt silly that it had taken me over a year to actually understand that we had had an abortion."
Baby Wren joins Legend and Teigen's three other children - Luna, seven, Miles, five, and Esti, six months. Congratulations to the happy family!
