Justin Timberlake has left Britney Spears' fans seething after seemingly throwing shade at the star's apology to him.

On Monday, Spears took to social media to apologize to her former lover and even went on to praise his latest single 'Selfish' after he was subjected to a barrage of hate due to the 42-year-old's memoir The Woman In Me.

When it was originally published in October last year, there were passages dedicated to the "love of her life" but they weren't all positive.

In one part of the book Spears recalled the time that Timberlake broke up with her over a "two-word" text when she was just 20 and was on the set of the 'Overprotected: The Darkchild Remix' music video in downtown LA.

Not only that, but later on after the pair had called it quits from their three-year relationship, he went on to fuel things further by writing songs that many believed were about Spears, including 'Cry Me A River' and 'What Goes Around Comes Around' which led to further backlash against the 'Toxic' singer.

In the wake of all the past drama, Spears decided she wanted to extend an olive branch by posting a public apology to Timberlake on Instagram.

"I wanna apologize for some of the things I wrote about in my book," she started the post alongside a snapshot of the singer with talk show host Jimmy Fallon. "If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about I am deeply sorry... I also wanted to say I am in love with Justin Timberlake's new song 'Selfish' it is soo good..."

She also added: "...And how come every time I see Justin and Jimmy together I laugh so hard???"

Regardless of how much Spears enjoyed the new song, her fans dethroned it from the top spot on the U.S. iTunes chart by streaming her 13-year-old bonus track of the same title.

So it's no wonder why Timberlake was clearly not in the mood to return the favor.

During a recent concert in New York City, the 43-year-old spoke to the audience and revealed how he felt about apologizing.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize… to absolutely f****** nobody," he said as per a video that has gone viral on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Another account also reported that he made the declaration before performing 'Cry Me a River,' - Coincidence? Fans think not.

Have a look for yourselves:

While Timberlake did not specify what he meant by his comment, Spears' stans did not take well to the apparent shade, with many expressing their thoughts on Timberlake in the comments.

"Britney and Janet ended this musty man," wrote one user, while another added: "This kind of 'I don’t care' attitude is only cute when you’ve actually done nothing wrong."

A third also stated that Timberlake was trying "so hard" to have a "controversial moment" but it just wasn't hitting.

Others also slammed him by saying: "Someone tell him we are in 2024 and not 2002."

The two iconic stars dated for a total of three years after getting together in 1999, and while things may have seemed perfect on the outside, their relationship was riddled with secrets and scandals that slowly came to light during a very highly publicized breakup in March 2002.

Let's hope they manage to keep that hatchet well and truly buried.
