It's often said, "Like mother, like daughter", and it turns out that this saying is particularly applicable to Katy Perry and her unborn baby girl, who has reacted to contestants performing on American Idol.

The 35-year-old made the surprising revelation on a special Mother's Day episode fo the popular talent show.

Katy Perry announces she's pregnant on Instagram:

While discussing motherhood with Ryan Seacrest, she explained: "I don't know what it is to be a mother, although I've always felt very motherly to my friends and my fans, but I know I'm about to step into the next level."

The 35-year-old added: "I even have a bump. She's kicking too. She kicks when the performances are good. So just let them be good but not too good because it's painful!"

The baby will be Perry's first child, who she shares with 43-year-old Orlando Bloom. He already has a nine-year-old son, Flynn, from a previous relationship with Miranda Kerr.

Perry also opened up about her pregnancy during the SHEIN Together Livestream event, which was raising funds for the World Health Organisation's Covid-19 Solidarity Response fund.

Discussing what it's like expecting during a pandemic, Perry said: "The mood I’m feeling right now is frazzled."

The 'Dark Horse' singer added that while she's having five good days a week, she is finding herself crying at almost everything; she said she'll "cry when I look down at my toes or I cry when just doing simple tasks."

"I think a lot of that is hormonal and I’m not used to being around so many people all in a confined [or] a small space for so long," she admitted.

However, while Perry might be more emotional than normal, her sense of humor hasn't waned, and she performed a rendition of Dumbo's 'Baby Mine' for the Disney Family Singalong, which was also aired to raise spirits during the pandemic.

Dressed in a giant elephant costume, she'd even dressed up her pet poodle, Nugget, for the occasion.

Introducing her act, Ryan quipped: "So, now it's time we hear from a very good friend of mine, someone who is truly committed to the Sing-a-Long challenge, in a way only she can.

"Here to perform the Oscar-nominated Baby Mine from the classic 1941 film Dumbo, it is Katy Perry, accompanied by someone who requires equal billing, her poodle, Nugget."
