The Golden Globes was back again this week after a year off and was hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael - though some viewers claimed he didn't live up to the standard of past host Ricky Gervais.
The awards ceremony took place on Tuesday (January 10) and saw many big names take to the red carpet, all vying for a prestigious award.
Notable winners include Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans taking home best drama movie, House of the Dragon winning best dramatic TV series, and Cate Blanchett adding to her many accolades with the best actress award for Tár.
Something that people are claiming missed the mark at this year's ceremony was the quality of jokes, including a segment about Jeffrey Dahmer that many believed was in very poor taste.
The host - Jerrod Charmichael - was also met with a mixed response from viewers after he poked fun at Tom Cruise and his ties to the Church of Scientology.
That being said, a few comments about Scientology is nothing compared to what Golden Globes attendees have experienced in recent years - as they're used to seeing British comedian Ricky Gervais waging war on the entire room.
Gervais has hosted the awards ceremony five times, and although he always caused controversy, viewers were missing seeing him leading this year's show.
The comedian always raised eyebrows during his brutal takedowns and nobody in the audience was safe. In 2016 Gervais went after Caitlyn Jenner and her recent transition at the time and also angered Mel Gibson after alleging he was an alcoholic, amongst other things, per the Hollywood Reporter.
With Gervais' nonchalant attitude towards the ceremonies he hosted, it would appear he is a man that cancel culture simply cannot get hold of.
Due to this, viewers missed his attendance last night. One person wrote on Twitter: "Bring back Ricky Gervais!!! The job of the host is to be funny and entertain!"
A second person said: "The Golden Globe Awards are a complete disaster as usual. Bring back Ricky Gervais," with a third adding: "Dear Golden Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press - please bring back Ricky Gervais."
Gervais has yet to comment following this year's awards or to address whether he'd maybe go back on his word and return for another year as host in the future.
While Carmichael didn't appear to tick the comedy boxes that many people have come to expect from the Golden Globes, it's likely because Gervais had set a high bar!
