Now, people are calling for Kobe's achievements to be honored by making him the new NBA logo. Fans set up a petition after his death was announced, and at the time of writing, it has already received 246K signatures.
It reads: "With the untimely and unexpected passing of Kobe Bryant please sign this petition in an attempt to make his memory last forever as the NBA Logo."
The current NBA logo is based on Jerry West. He has had the honor for decades and was actually the man who drafted Kobe to the Los Angeles Lakers back in 1996.
Prior to this, West played for the iconic team in the 1960s. Now his number, 44, has been retired and is on display in the Staples Centre.
Yesterday, when asked about Kobe's passing, West said that it was like losing a son.
"I watched him grow from an energetic kid into the man he became, making a difference in so many peoples [lives]," he said in a statement. "He has left the world a better place. Kobe's legacy will live forever."
