Linguistics buffs have been left scratching their heads after Sam Smith discussed their dream of becoming a fisher-them, having spoken about their secret love of fly-fishing.

The 30-year-old singer appeared on BBC's The One Show to discuss their recent Grammy win and standout performance with Kim Petras at the Brit Awards.

Smith and Petras managed to take home a Grammy for Best Pop Duo, where they took the stage to sing their joint hit 'Unholy'. This culminated in a slew of criticism - and could potentially cost the CBS network a fine - after viewers complained about the apparent Satanic imagery on stage.

During that performance, Smith donned a red top hat complete with horns, while 30-year-old Petras gyrated in a cage surrounded by dancers dressed as the Devil. Funnily enough, the Church of Satan responded to the situation, claiming that what Smith and Petras tried to achieve was "nothing particularly special", especially because the Satanic imagery was "kind of passé" now.

However, while the Demonic accusations may have died down over the past few weeks, people are now discussing Smith for a whole new reason - namely, their recent revelation that they have a love for fly-fishing and wouldn't be opposed to taking up a new career as a fisher-them.

Co-host Ronan Keating had said to Smith: "You're a big fan of fishing?"

To which the 'Stay With Me' singer replied: "I do love fishing, yes I do! Yes, I'd love to be a fisher-them."

"fly fishermansherman?", co-host Alex Jones asked, at which point Smith corrected her saying: "I'd be any type of fisher-them. I think I would like to, one day, I'd just like to end my days fishing. Like sitting on a bank."

They then added: "I do it on the sea and I do it on lakes. I've never done it alone, someone's almost taught me."

Some folks on Twitter had a problem with Smith and what they said, with one person sharing a short clip of the exchange and writing: "Sam Smith wants to be a 'fisherthem.' He means fisherman. But he wants to make sure you know he's special and different and you need to pay attention to him. I'm not going to do well in Clown World."

Then Oli London - who has made headlines in the past by identifying as a transracial Korean woman despite being Caucasian, and now identifies as a Conservative Christian man - even hit out at Smith, tweeting: "Sam Smith says he loves fishing and identifies as a FisherTHEM not a Fishermen but a Fisherthem [...]"

"Sam Smith just called himself 'fisherthem' instead of 'fisherman'. My English as a Foreign Language teacher must be somewhere banging his head into a brick wall," another user added.

Others really didn't see the big deal with the whole affair. As one user pointed out: "i find it so funny that a certain generation bang on about the youth being 'snowflakes' but get absolutely rattled by sam smith wearing a t shirt & shorts and saying 'fisherthem.'"

"if ur fuming about sam smith calling themself a fisherthem you have no sense of humour that was so funny of them," another person chimed in.
