Shannen Doherty has filed for divorce from her husband Kurt Iswarienko after 12 years of marriage, her publicist has confirmed.
The actress, 52, best known for starring in Beverly Hills 90210 and Heathers, had been married to photographer Iswarienko since 2011.
Doherty filed divorce papers on Friday in Los Angeles, according to reports from TMZ, which stated that the couple has been separated since January.
The actress has also been living with stage four cancer in recent years, revealing in February 2020 that the cancer had returned a year prior after first being diagnosed in 2015.
News of the split was confirmed by Doherty's publicist Leslie Sloane, who said in a statement: "Divorce is the last thing Shannen wanted. Unfortunately, she felt she was left with no other option. You can contact Kurt’s agent, Collier Grimm at PICTUREKID, as she is intimately involved."
Iswarienko's representatives have yet to comment publicly.
Sources added to the outlet that Doherty is "not well" health-wise which is making the "acrimonious" break-up even harder.
Before the news was announced, Doherty had also shared a post on Instagram reading: "The only people who deserve to be in your life are the ones who treat you with love, kindness, and total respect."
According to reports, Doherty and Iswarienko, 48, did not have a pre-nuptial agreement and the actress is asking for spousal support but that it isn't awarded to her ex-husband. The couple do not share any children.
Doherty had previously opened up about her first battle with breast cancer, saying in 2019 that it helped her and Iswarienko grow closer.
She told People at the time: "Cancer solidified us. Kurt and I have a much deeper appreciation for each other now.
"It’s not that our marriage wasn’t good before. But we were definitely going through some growing pains. We would lock horns on things, and instead of resolving it, we wouldn’t speak for a couple of days.
"[Now,] we don’t let a night go by mad at each other. The last time we had a big argument was pre-cancer."
The Charmed star had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and underwent a mastectomy and gruelling rounds of chemotherapy before entering remission in 2018.
She revealed in 2020 that the cancer had devastatingly returned and she was now stage four.
Doherty wrote in October: "For breast cancer awareness month, I’d like to share more of my own personal journey from my first diagnosis to my second. Is it all pretty? NO but it’s truthful and my hope in sharing is that we all become more educated, more familiar with what cancer looks like. I hope I encourage people to get mammograms, to get regular checkups, to cut thru the fear and face whatever might be in front of you.
"In 2015 I got diagnosed with breast cancer. I had a mastectomy and did chemo and radiation. I had many nose bleeds from the chemo. Not sure if any of you experienced this. I also was beyond tired. I cheered myself up by putting on funny pajamas that my friend Kristy gave me. Did they actually cheer me up? Yes!! Lol.
"I looked ridiculous and in that ridiculousness, I was able to laugh at myself. Finding humor helped get me thru what seemed impossible. I hope we all find humor in the impossible."
Iswarienko is Doherty's third husband, with the actress previously being married to actor Ashley Hamilton from 1993 to 1994, and poker star Rick Salomon from 2002 until 2003.
She is now being represented by celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser as she navigates her split from Iswarienko.
