Football star Cristiano Ronaldo announced yesterday that his baby son had tragically passed away.

Tributes have already begun flooding in for the Manchester United player and his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez, who shared their sad news in an Instagram post on Monday.

Last October, the pair announced that they were expecting twins. A few months later in December, they shared that they would be welcoming a baby boy and a baby girl.

In their social media post, Ronaldo and Rodriguez said that the loss of their son is "the greatest pain that any parents can feel", but that the birth of their daughter "gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness."

"We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time. Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you," they added.

Since the couple announced their tragic loss, tributes have poured in from famous friends and teammates expressing their condolences.

"Thoughts are with you and Georgina brother. I’m so sorry," wrote fellow Manchester United player Marcus Rashford.

"Heartbreaking news. My deepest condolences to you and all your family," Piers Morgan commented on Instagram, while ex-Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt posted three prayer emojis.

The star's current football team Manchester United was one of many clubs that took to Twitter to offer him and his partner their thoughts and prayers.

"Your pain is our pain, @Cristiano. Sending love and strength to you and the family at this time," the official Twitter account of Manchester United wrote.

His old team Juventas also expressed their condolences, writing: "Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Georgina and the whole family during this time."

Ronaldo and Rodriguez already share a daughter, four-year-old Alana Martin. The star also has a son from a previous relationship, Cristiano Jr., and twins who he fathered with a surrogate mother from the US, Eva, and Matteo. He and Rogriguez are still yet to announce the name of their newborn daughter.
