Zac Efron fans have voiced their outrage after the actor was left off the Oscars 2024 nominations list.
The latest round of movies, actors, and directors in contention for the Academy Awards have been announced live from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater by Zazie Beetz (Atlanta and Joker) and Jack Quaid (The Boys and Oppenheimer).
Oppenheimer led the tally with a staggering total of 13 nominations, including director and adapted screenplay for Christopher Nolan and individual nominees for stars Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, and Emily Blunt.
Meanwhile, Yorgos Lanthimos's Poor Things scored 11, and Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon nabbed 10, while Greta Gerwig's Barbie earned eight. All four films will compete for Best Picture, along with American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Maestro, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest.
Bradley Cooper's biopic on the personal and professional dramas of Leonard Bernstein scored recognition in seven categories, including sound, makeup, and hair, while the 49-year-old himself is up for original screenplay and best actor.
There were also surprise nominations this year, such as Colman Domingo earning the Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as the civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in Rustin, and Jeffrey Wright as Thelonious "Monk" Ellison in American Fiction.
Of course, there were also shocking omissions including Gerwig, who was left out of the Best Director category despite helming the number one movie of the year at the box office, and Margot Robbie who was absent from the Best Actress category.
In addition to this, some fans have pointed out on X (formerly known as Twitter) that Efron's performance as wrestler Kevin Von Erich in the new movie Iron Claw has gone unnoticed.
"SNUBBING ZAC EFRON AFTER HE DELIVERED WHAT WAS ARGUABLY THE GREATEST PERFORMANCE OF 2023 ?!?! DISGUSTING," one user said, expressing their anger.
Another person penned: "Iron Claw being shut out of the Oscars is probably the biggest snub for me. The movie was heartbreaking and compelling. It deserves to be recognized, and, if anything, a nomination for Zac Efron. His transformation for that role was some of the best acting I’ve seen."
A third user shared a similar sentiment, writing: "The thing that I’m most mad about getting snubbed is Iron Claw in general but specifically Zac Efron who gave such an incredible performance it deserved to at least be recognized by the academy."
A fourth added: "Really disappointing this film got snubbed at so many awards shows, it was an incredibly impactful film. Zac Efron deserves his praise."
The Academy Awards are voted for by almost 11,000 voters of industry professionals from 93 countries, according to The Guardian.
The 96th ceremony will air live on March 10 from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, with Jimmy Kimmel expected to host for the fourth time.
