If cinematic, starry-eyed high school romps have taught us anything, it’s that prom is probably the most important thing in the world. The empirical evidence for this might be scarce, but judging by the amount of currency it has in pop culture, we reckon it’s almost certainly true.

Sadly for hundreds of thousands of high schoolers across America, 2020 presents something of a socially distanced challenge for anyone desperate to dance badly and confess unrequited love to a peer in front of their classmates. But, just because there’s a global pandemic, it doesn’t mean that you can’t celebrate the end of high school in style.

In some much needed feel-good news, a seven-year-old North Carolinian decided to do something extra special for his prom-deprived nanny.

After hearing that her celebration had been canceled as a direct result of the pandemic, Curtis Rogers decided to organize his own socially-distanced celebration to make sure the day was every bit as memorable as it should be.

Rachel Chapman, who hadn’t seen her charge for two months due to the pandemic, told ABC 11 that the gesture was much appreciated. As she explained it:

“I was kind of like bummed putting my dress on because I was sad; I don't get to wear it to my senior prom. After leaving it and having that time with him because it was the first time I had seen him in two months, it was like, really fun, and I'm really glad that he did that.

“First he was waiting outside when we got there with the pool noodle and then he led me into the backyard. He had all my favorite foods and everything. I could tell he put a lot of thought into it.”

Pictures of the pseudo-prom were posted by Rachel’s mom, Becky, and soon racked up over 12,000 likes on Twitter alone. Becky wrote alongside them:

"My daughter has been a nanny for this amazing kid for over a year. When he realized she wouldn’t have a senior prom, he wanted to throw her one. He planned a socially distant prom, complete with dancing & her favorite foods."

It just goes to show that, with a little ingenuity and a lot of thought, you can still put on a special celebration - whatever the circumstances.
