A New York-based company called Defender Ring is selling a range of jewelry aimed at keeping the wearer safe by concealing a small blade that can be used to fight off attackers and even collect their DNA.
On their official website, the company describes itself as "self defense company and social empowerment brand", and says its mission is to "offer everyday jewelry rings with powerful self defense capabilities" with the aim of creating "a safer everyday life for people around the world."

The company says their unique rings were invented following the respective 2016 murders of Karina Vetrano and Vanessa Marcotte, who were both attacked and killed in broad daylight while jogging in New York City.

Defender Ring states that "the highly publicized incidents sparked the creation of our self defense ring as a solution to violence against women".
The rings are described as "a small, light, piece of everyday jewelry that can be turned into an effective self-defense weapon whether you're out jogging or at dinner.
"Blending function with fashion, wear the ring regularly as an accessory with peace of mind knowing that you have a small blade attached to your fist if someone tries to attack you."

Each ring is designed to look like a discreet and ordinary piece of jewelry, with each piece coming with a "top" that conceals the blade. The item description reads:

The rings come in a range of colors and styles, and each can be personalized with different tops. Prices range between $59 and $79 for the rings, while the tops range between $20 and $30.
