A woman has tragically passed away days after giving birth to a healthy baby girl while fighting Covid-19.
According to People magazine, 30-year-old Kristen McMullen developed Covid symptoms a mere three weeks before she was due to give birth.
She was taken to hospital for treatment but sent home after four days with a course of antibiotics. But less than 48 hours later, her breathing had worsened significantly, leading to her being rushed back to the hospital.
While McMullen was in a critical condition, doctors worked frantically to deliver her baby via Caesarian section.
The young mother was able to hold her little baby girl, whom she named Summer Reign, for a few moments before being taken to the intensive care unit.
However, according to a GoFundMe page launched by her aunt Melissa Syverson in a bid to alleviate the family's financial pressures, McMullen died after she was placed on a ventilator in the ICU - days after giving birth.
Commenting on her niece's unfortunate passing in a post made on the GoFundMe page, Syverson stated: "The loss of Kristen ... is devastating to our family and we can't imagine life without her.
"She lit up the room wherever she was, her laughter was contagious and she will be truly missed every day until we all take our last breath.
"We're so thankful for the time we had with her and thank God for the blessing of her little girl that she left behind."
Although her family has not revealed whether or not McMullen was vaccinated against Covid-19, they urged other members of the public to get themselves vaccinated, per CBS News.
James Syverson, McMullen's uncle, told NBC News: "She never got sick, and we assumed like many people that this would just go away just as quickly as it came.
"Because with a lot of younger people - she was only 30 years old - that she would breeze through it and be back taking charge of life.
Her aunt told the outlet: "We personally feel that whether a pregnant woman is or isn't [vaccinated] or whether they wear a mask or don't wear a mask, we feel like they're at a huge risk potentially for it to be deadly for them or their baby."
Kirsten McMullen is survived by her infant daughter, as well as her husband and father of her child, Keith.
