There's one part of a date that everyone dreads - the bill.
Whether you're used to going Dutch or prefer to pick up the tab, there's always the possibility for things to get awkward.
One woman on TikTok had a particularly painful experience when her date loaded up his own plate - only to ask if they could split things down the middle.
Marina (who goes by the handle @marina_in_dubai on TikTok) took to the social media platform to vent about the evening.
"So I'm on a date with this European guy at the restaurant," she said in a video clip posted to TikTok. "He's ordering himself steak, a side dish, an appetizer, a few glasses of red wine, and so on," she described.
While he may have gone all out, Marina only had a small meal, saying: "I just got myself like one small salad and one cocktail."
When the bill came, Marina did the polite thing and offered to pay some. "'Would you like me to contribute?'" she asked, before recalling his response.
"He's like 'oh yeah sure, let's do 50/50.''"
At this point, she looks at the camera in shock. "50/50? No. Are you serious? No way. I am not gonna pay 50/50 for one small salad and a cocktail," she tells her followers.
Since being posted last month, the video has been viewed over 100,000 times. Responses have been divided, with many taking to the comments section to discuss whether Marina's date was in the wrong.
Many argued that the man should pay.

"I believe that offering up to pay the bill is the gentleman's thing to do," wrote one user.
"I'm not paying anything. Period. It's a date. Let that man be a man and not a friend of yours," added another.

"Girls shouldn't pay," agreed a third.

"How in the world did he think that was a fair split," added another.

Others users were of the opinion this was unfair and hypocritical.

"Feminism equality and stuff as long as you benefit right," one person argued.
Meanwhile, some said that it would be fairest if everyone simply paid for what they had bought - and pointed out that considering how much more Marina's date had eaten, it wasn't fair to split 50/50.

"How about everyone paying their bill," one commented.
