The 29-year-old actor has now filed a petition to end his marriage to the 26-year-old pop star in a court in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Hemsworth's request allegedly states that he is asking for a dissolution of the marriage - adding that the couple does not have children.

In a recent post made on Instagram, Hemsworth appeared to imply that the breakup had been an amicable one. Posting a picture of a beach at sunset, he wrote: "Hi all. Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward."

He added: "This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love [sic]."

Commenting on the situation, a spokesperson for the couple recently told People: "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers."

They added: "They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy. [sic]"
